He was a graduate of Eubank High School and Berea College. Upon graduation from Berea, Ron began a lifetime of public service and joined the United States Army. He left the Army as a Captain to care for ailing parents and joined the Kentucky Army National Guard and worked for the Government of Accountability Office. It was during this time that Ron met the love of his life and married Mary Ann Turpen on July 19, 1969.

Ron continued his service and was elected to what was the first of 5 terms as Property Valuation Administrator. During his time as PVA he continued to rise in rank in the Guard, founded GRAM Software and continued to operate and maintain his proprietary software up until 4 weeks before his passing. Ron was a member of Campground Baptist Church, a member of the Officer Candidates School Hall of Fame along with many other organizations that are too numerous to mention. In his spare time, he enjoyed golf, woodworking, reading anything he can get his hands on and military history, but what he enjoyed most was his family and friends. He was smart, unassuming, generous and thoughtful. In true spirit of the man he was, his only concern at the end was that of his family, telling them to go to work or go home and get some rest.

Ron is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann Woodson, sons Alan Woodson of Somerset and John Woodson (Jaime Ridner) of Somerset, KY. Two siblings, Hila (George) Williams of Scranton, PA and Creston (Pat) Woodson of Cypress, TX, scores of nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters in law, Peggy (Jack) Lockwood, Gladys Bryant, Jesse (Ruth) Turpen, Larry (Phyllis) Turpen, Othel (Tracey) Turpen, his KY National Guard family, his golf family of Eagles Nest Country Club, his golf family of Palmira Golf Club in Bonita Springs, FL and a lifetime of cherished friendships.

PHIL BOWER

Rev. Phil Bower, age 70, of Somerset, KY, formerly of Hurricane, WV, passed away at his home, surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, September 19, 2021.  He entered into the arms of his Heavenly Father, whom he had faithfully served in ministry for over fifty-two years.

Phil married Brenda Baker Bower, who survives him, on August 10, 1969. Shortly after their union in marriage, he answered the call of God on his life to be a minister, while attending a revival service led by Grandma Jones. Phil began his ministry in 1974 at Manchester Church of the Nazarene in Manchester, OH.  In 1980 he started pastoring the Kettering First Church of the Nazarene and then followed to Somerset First Church of the Nazarene in Somerset, KY in 1986.  He pastored at Somerset until 1992 and then moved to Logan, WV, to the Logan First Church of the Nazarene.  In 1999, Phil accepted the pastorate at Hurricane First Church of the Nazarene in Hurricane, WV.  He retired from Hurricane First Church in July 2021, after pastoring there for 22 years.  For over fifty years he shared the gospel of Jesus while holding revivals, preaching on the radio, and leading local congregations to worship. As a pastor, he was known for his knowledge of scripture and an unwavering commitment to the church. His “Holiness Unto the Lord” radio broadcast typified the strength of his faith and the fiery preaching style which challenged any who heard his sermons. In his words, he loved the “old time religion” and for the thousands who heard his sermons, they never left a service without hearing about his love and commitment to Jesus Christ and witnessing his passion in the way he shared the gospel.

The commitment he exercised in his service to the Lord and the church, was also reflected in his unwavering love for his family. Brenda Bower, his wife, was his soul mate and partner in ministry. He referred to her as his better half and lived a life committed to their love for fifty-two years. He wore his love for his wife openly for everyone to see and it was immense. His family was the recipient of the depth of his love, strength, and unfaltering faith. Brenda and his sons, Tony and T. J., daily witnessed a father who was always their rock, never wavering as a protector and provider. That love would expand to two daughter-in-laws, Kristin and Andrea, and   four grandchildren, Matthew, Nicholas, Emily, and Logan. The impression and legacy of love and faith that he built will always be the foundation of his family.

Phil Bower is survived by his wife, Brenda Baker Bower of Somerset, KY; son Tony (Kristin) Bower of Kettering, OH; son T. J. (Andrea)  Bower of Ferguson, KY; grandchildren Matthew Ryan (Keandra) Bower, Nicholas Anthony (Madison) Bower, Emily Victoria Bower (fiance Aaron Smith), and Logan Joseph Bower.

He was preceded in death by his parents Lloyd Eugene Bower and Alma Johnson Bower, and his brother and sister-in-law, Ray Eugene Bower and Rosemary Presley Bower.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 24, 2021, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Millville Avenue Church of the Nazarene, in Hamilton, Ohio.  His funeral service will follow visitation at 1:00 PM with Rev. ZACHARY LOVINS

Zachary “Zach” Grant Lovins, age 31, of Somerset, KY., passed away on Friday, September 10, 2021 at his residence.

Zach was born on November 14, 1989 in Somerset, KY., to Harold Jeffrey and Tonia Susan Price Lovins.. Zach’s larger than life personality truly had a servant’s heart. He attended Beacon Hill Baptist Church and accepted Christ at the age of 7 in Teamkid. When he was called upon, he immediately answered without hesitation.  He was a protector, defender and a friend to everyone.  His talent was beyond comprehension.  Zach loved high performance engines and making things go fast(er). He played football for Southwestern High School and earned a scholarship to play at the collegiate level before graduating in 2008. Zach was a teacher, loyal friend and confidant to many.  When he wasn’t working, you could always find him on a dirt bike, RZR or helping a friend.  Prankster should have been his middle name.  Nothing made him laugh harder than watching your reaction to a heart stopping scare or a coke refill spiked with vinegar.  His presence could light up a room or make some squirm- exactly as he wished.  Zachary “Boone” was his pride and joy- he loved his family with his whole heart.  You couldn’t contain the joy they brought to each other’s lives.  Boone will forever be told how much his daddy loves him.  You never have to look far to find someone who loves Zach.  We will cling to the timeless memories and carry him with us each and every day.

He is survived by his wife, Sara Kodi Meadors Lovins of Somerset, KY; a son, Zachary “Boone” Lovins of Somerset; his parents, Jeff and Tonia Lovins of Somerset; two sisters, Chelsea (and Brad) Wilson of Somerset and Allyson Lovins (and Jacob Denney) of Somerset; maternal grandmother, Jalene Price of Somerset; paternal grandparents, Gordon (and Frances) Lovins of Somerset; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Onnie and Sonya Meadors of Williamsburg; a nephew, Braden Wilson; two sisters-in-law, Jessica (Guston) Thomas, Heather (Caleb) Shirley, and their children Harrison, Walton Thomas, Josiah, and Ada Shirley; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and other family members.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Jerry Price.
