GREGORY "BUTCH" GODBEY

 

Gregory “Butch” Godbey, 67, of Poplar Hill, KY, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 8, 2025, at UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital.

 

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Butch was known for his fun-loving spirit, protective nature, and unwavering dependability. A farmer and true jack-of-all-trades, he could fix nearly anything and was always willing to lend a hand. He had a gift for making people feel seen and valued, often serving as a father figure to many children in the community. His laugh — warm, full, and contagious — could turn the coldest heart warm, and it will echo in the memories of all who knew him.

 

He is survived by his loving wife, Betsy Godbey; daughters, Greta Godbey (Chris Peoples), Jeanna Godbey (Joshua “Ben” Coggins), and Ashley (Russell) Martin; grandchildren, Aniya (Ben, Waylon, and Weston Haycox), Aliyah, Ariyana, and Axtyn Foster; Jaylah Godbey; Jordan and Journey Coggins; Elli, Lincoln, Charlie, and Evan Martin; Natalie Johnson; Shaila (Kevin) Sanders; Breanna (Sean) Baker; Ariana Hare; Rayven Estep; and Kenzie Demers; as well as a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He is also survived by his sister, Rita (Steve) Sweeney; brothers, Chris (Jennifer) Godbey, Mike (Ellen) Godbey, and Steve (Anita) Godbey; his special aunt, Susan Godbey; and special uncle, Vernie Watson.

 

Butch was preceded in death by his mother, Myrtle Russell; father, Frank Godbey; and uncle, Vadis “Harvey” Godbey.

 

Honorary pallbearers are Gilbert Cravens, Ricky Terry, Andrew Godbey, Philip Godbey, Russell Martin, Joshua “Ben” Coggins, Chris Peoples, and Ben Haycox.

 

Services will be held at Bartle Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 12, 2025. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. for the public, with the service starting at 1:00 p.m. Bro. Johnny Maupin and Bro. Kevin Pittman officiating. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no burial. Butch will be cremated and his ashes spread upon “the knob.” Following the service, a meal will be held at Valley Oak Baptist Church.

 

He was loved by so many and will be deeply missed. His legacy of love, generosity, and laughter will live on through his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched.

KIRBY PATTERSON

 

Kirby Glen Patterson. Beloved husband of Mary Moyers. Devoted father of Kelvin (Connie) Patterson and James D. (Krista) Patterson. Loving grandfather of Ryan, Lukas, Dallas, Kathryn, and Ciara Patterson. Dear brother of Roger Elmo Patterson. Preceded in death by first wife, Vivian Bernice (nee Merritt) Patterson; and siblings, Norma Jean Minton, Walter Dale Patterson, and Randall L. Patterson.

 

Born May 16, 1937 to Ocie Glen and Myrtle Ethel (nee Roberts) Patterson in Casey County, KY. Kirby passed away on Thursday, August 7, 2025 at age 88.

 

Visitation will be held at New Haven Missionary Baptist Church, 2417 Indian Mound Ave., Norwood, OH 45212 on Tuesday, August 12, 2025 beginning at 5PM until time of funeral service at 7PM.

 

Additional visitation will be held at Oak Grove Baptist Church, 5697 Thomas Ridge Rd., Dunnville, KY 42528 on Wednesday, August 13, 2025 beginning at 11AM until time of service at 12Noon. Bro. Dwight Coffman officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

DENNIS GRIDER

 

Dennis Grider age 73, of Liberty, KY, passed away on Tuesday August 5th, 2025, at his residence. He was born in Liberty, KY on December 2nd, 1951, to the late Ollie C. and Mabel Woodrum Grider.

 

Dennis worked in construction and was a member of Carter Ridge Baptist Church. 

 

Survivors include: his spouse: Sharon Spaw Grider, two children: Amie and (Jim) Adkins of Liberty and Neal and (Karen) Grider of Liberty, four grandchildren: Sarah and (Austin) Ballou, Noah Adkins, Elizabeth Grider and Emma Grider, two brothers: David and (Margaret) Grider and Jimmy and (Alta) Grider both of Liberty, two sisters: Malinda and (the late Kenny) Spaw and Teresa and (Kevin) Eads both of Liberty and sister in law: Gwen Grider of Middleburg.

 

Preceding him in death besides his parents was one brother: Donny Grider.

 

Visitation will be held 6:00 P.M. till 8:00 P.M. Friday August 8th, 2025, at Bartle Funeral Home Chapel.

DOROTHY STATHAM

 

Dorothy Jean Statham age 89, of Somerset, KY, passed away on Sunday August 3rd, 2025, at the Somerset Nursing and Rehab. She was born in Harlan, KY on May 14th, 1936, to the late Frank Greene Noe and Juanita Helton Gaines.

 

Dorothy was the widow of James Victor Statham who passed away on August 2nd, 2007.

Dorothy was a housewife.

 

Survivors include: one daughter: Kimberly Isert of Chuluota, FL, six grandchildren: Eric Statham, Michael Statham, Jamie Statham, Amber Valentine, Emily Isert and Trevor Isert, five great grandchildren, and two sisters: Watha Roark of Cincinnati, OH and Willa Isaacs of Cincinnati, OH.

 

Preceding her in death besides her parents was two sons: Brian Keith Statham and Van Alan Statham, one brother: Bobby Noe and one sister: Charlotte Daniel.

 

Visitation will be held 12:00 Noon Friday August 8th, 2025, at Bartle Funeral Home Chapel.

HEATHER EVANS

 

Heather Nicole Evans, of Liberty, passed away Saturday, August 9, 2025, at her residence. She was 35.

 

She was born on May 11, 1990, in Taylor County, KY to Roger Evans and the late Dorothy Patton Evans. Heather formerly worked as a CNA and enjoyed walking and exercising. She loved animals and spending time with her children.

 

Heather is survived by her daughter, Isabella Evans; a son, Joshua Evans; her parents, Roger (Peggy) Evans; her sisters, Jessica Evans, Cassie Evans and Crystal Evans; her brothers, Derek Evans, Blake Evans, William Shelby Scott and John (Suzetta) Dillion; her maternal grandparents, Otis and Nancy Patton; her fiancé, Anthony Glover; and the father of her children, Hector Jiminez.

 

Funeral services will be Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at 1:00 PM at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Gary Evans officiating.  

 

Burial will follow at Salem Cemetery.

 

Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 PM on Monday, August 11, 2025.

 

SHIRLEY JOHNSON

 

Shirley Johnson of Mooresville, IN passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home July 30th, 2025, with his family by his side. He was a member of Eternal Life Baptist Church in Mooresville. He now resides in his Heavenly home. He preceded in death by his wife Betty Jean Johnson.

 

He was born on July 24th, 1935, in Liberty, KY, to the late Pina Johnson and Franklin Cox. He always enjoyed playing his guitar and even played in a band in his earlier years. He was a good and loving Husband and Father, a good provider, and loved his family very much and was always there for them.

 

He started out rebuilding armatures, starter, and generators and later became a construction worker and operated heavy machinery. Also, he was a mechanic and was promoted to his Company’s Mechanic shop where he kept up on all mechanical issues regarding company trucks and other vehicles and on the job construction equipment. He was skilled in paint, body and fender work on all types of vehicles. He loved working on cars, trucks and tractors and he often would do repairs for other people just to help them out. He loved being outside in the summer months cutting his grass, planting, and working in his garden and canning. He loved messing around in the garage doing little odds and end things. He loved to cook, and he loved to bake pies, cakes, apple rolls, etc.

 

Survivors include his four children: Pam Walton (Chuck), Stu Johnson (Pam), Kenneth Johnson (Debbie) and Shannon Kaiser (Raoul). He has six grandchildren: Angelique, Jenny, Devan, Braydon, Carleigh, Mackenzi. Six great grandchildren/ Vadah, Curt, John, Kyler, Brayden, Ryah, four brothers: Ron Cox of Liberty, Joe Cox of Liberty, Fairley Cox of Liberty and Lonnie Cox of MA and three sisters: Rose Gillock of Liberty, Gail Reid of Hustonville and Betty McQueary of Liberty.

 

Preceding him in death besides his parents and spouse was four brothers: Garnett, Lemuel, Ottis and Billy Ray Cox.

 

Visitation will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday August 6th, 2025, at Bartle Funeral Home Chapel.

 

Funeral Services will be held 1:00 P.M. Wednesday August 6th, 2025, at Bartle Funeral Home Chapel. Bro. Brent Huggins officiating.

 

Burial will be in the Poplar Grove Cemetery.

BRENDA CUMMINS

 

Brenda Louise Cummins, of Kings Mountain, passed away on Monday, August 4, 2025, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was 66.

 

Born on June 30, 1959, in Casey County, Kentucky, she was a daughter of the late Glen “Bigboy” and Elsie Louise Clark Napier. Brenda was a faithful member of Grove Ridge Baptist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, shopping, flowers, and hummingbird watching.

 

She is survived by her husband, John Jerome Cummins, who she wed on August 5, 1977; a daughter, Jessica (William) Carpenter of Lexington; two sisters, Retha (Dale) Atwood and Lisa (Tim) Childers, both of Kings Mountain; a brother, Ronald (Kathy) Napier of Kings Mountain; and a granddaughter, Victoria (Jonathan) Berry of Raleigh, North Carolina. Other survivors include nieces and nephews, Jantzen Denny, Eli Childers, Macy (Cody) Dillon, Amy (Brandon) Wood, Amanda Napier, Justin Cummins, Allison Cummins, Weston Nall, Kenton (Abby) Nall, and Jenna Nall; a sister-in-law, Patricia Cummins; and a brother-in-law, Robert (Donna) Cummins.

 

She is preceded in death by a brother, Harold Dean Napier.

 

The funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Edward Bray and Bro. Randy Watts officiating.

 

Burial will follow in KP Hall Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Friday, August 8, 2025, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home and from 8:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home.

LOUISE GRIMES

 

Louise Grimes age 76, of Dunnville, KY, passed away on Sunday July 27th, 2025, at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. She was born in Casey Co., KY on December 6th, 1948 to the late Clarence and Sarah Ortha Cain Clements.

 

Survivors include: her spouse: Ronnie Allan Grimes, two sons: Allan and (Penny) Grimes of Dunnville, and Daniel Grimes of Dunnville, three grandchildren: Amanda Feese, Dylan Galloway and William Grimes, six great grandchildren, and two sisters: Norma Skaggs of FL and Joyce Blair of Liberty and daughter in law: Lexie Boyton.

 

Preceding her in death besides her parents was one son: one son: Gregory Galloway, two grandchildren: Gregory T. Galloway and Christopher Helton, three brothers: Elmer R. Wilson, Junior Clements and Mitchell Clements and two sisters: Nina Vanoy and Nadene Sears.

 

Visitation will be held 11:00 A.M. Thursday July 31st, 2025, at Bartle Funeral Home Chapel.

BETTY WEDDLE

 

Betty Lou Brown Weddle, of Liberty, passed from this life at 8:00AM on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at her home, surrounded by family. She was 92.

 

She was born on September 17, 1932, in Casey County, KY to the late Ottis “Ott” and Lucy Ann Stone Brown.

 

Betty was a retired teacher with the Casey County School System.  After graduating from the University of Kentucky, she started her teaching career at Creston, in a one-room school.  She spent most of her 30-year career at Liberty Elementary School where she taught 5th grade and 8th grade literature. She was a member of Liberty First Christian Church, where she formerly served as a Board Member and a Sunday School teacher.

 

She was involved with politics, specifically the Republican Party, all her life.  Betty was a former liaison for Gov. Louie B. Nunn and is the current Vice Chairperson for the Casey County Republican Party. She was a special friend to Senator Mitch McConnell. Betty Lou loved her family, her teaching profession, her students and the people of Casey County.

 

Survivors include her son, Thomas Marion Weddle, Jr., of Liberty; her daughter, Linda Hatter, of Liberty; three grandchildren, Andrew Weddle, Luann (and Hagen) Williams, and McKinzee (and Stephen) Frazier; and four great-grandchildren, Mason Weddle, Lucy Williams, Anslee Weddle, and Reed Williams.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Marion “T.M.” Weddle, who passed away on June 25, 2021, and her son-in-law, Jeff Hatter.

 

Funeral services will be at 3:00PM on Sunday, August 3, 2025, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Dwight Coffman officiating.

 

Burial will be private.

 

The family will receive visitors from 1:00PM to 3:00PM Sunday, August 3, 2025, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home.

 

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Housam Haddad, Johnny Beard, Stuart Carman, Reed Williams, Andrew Weddle, Hagen Williams, Mason Weddle, Stephen Frazier, and Daniel Perez.

JOSEPH McQUEARY

 

Joseph Mark McQueary, of Contown Road, passed away on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at the Jean Waddle Care Center in Somerset, KY. He was 61.

 

Born April 27, 1964, in Casey County, he was a son of the late Arnold Lee McQueary and Ruby Kathleen Lee McQueary. Mark enjoyed coon hunting and trading horses, guns, and knifes. He would often visit the flea markets, even setting up a booth of his own. Mark attended the Rocky Top Church of Christ. He was a devoted father and grandfather.

 

Survivors include his wife, Lisa Anne Campbell McQueary; his children, Ruby Anne McQueary, Jospeh Arnold McQueary, Isaiah McQueary, Elijah McQueary, and Lisa Elizabeth McQueary, all of Liberty; brothers, John (Judy) McQueary and James “Boone” McQueary; sister, Mary (and Michael) Cundiff; two grandchildren, Greyson McQueary and Granger Price; and bonus daughter, Hannah Price.

 

Mark was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Audie and Gene McQueary.

 

Services and burial were held privately at the McQueary Family Cemetery.

 

Memorial contributions are suggested to help offset funeral expenses.

 

WILMA "PO" GOEBEL

 

Wilma Pauline “Po” Goebel, 78, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on July 27, 2025 at Baptist Health Louisville.

 

She was born on March 14, 1947 in Casey County, KY to the late Odelia Wethington and Frank Wethington, Sr.

 

She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church and worked for 10 years as an apartment manager for Lafayette Enterprises.  She was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to all.

 

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her siblings, Marietta Wethington, Geraldine Pennington (Jim), Linda Pennington (Bill), Frank Wethington, Jr. (Sandy), Robert Wethington, and Kay Edwards; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Wethington.

 

She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Paul A, Goebel; son, Greg Goebel (Gretchen Finniff); daughter, Camille Kalmey (Pete); grandchildren, Chace and Crew Kalmey, Aidan, Declan, and Cormac; brother, Rick Wethington; brother-in-law, Chester Edwards; and sister-in-law, Gay Wethington.

 

Her funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday at St. Michael Catholic Church 3703 Stone Lakes Drive. 

 

Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. – 7 p.m. on Thursday at Ratterman & Sons Jeffersontown 10600 Taylorsville Road Louisville, KY 40299 and on Friday from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. at St. Bernard Catholic Church 5075 State Hwy. 551 Liberty, KY 42539. 

 

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday at St. Bernard Catholic Church Cemetery (Liberty, KY).

 

Memorial gifts may be made to Ursuline Sisters of Mount St. Joseph 8001 Cummings Road, Maple Mount, KY 42356.
