James Monroe Lynn, Jr., born to Clara Mae Roberts Lynn (Austin) Brown and James (Jody) Monroe Lynn, on September 8, 1941, in Louisville, Kentucky.? ? He was lovingly reared by his grandparents, Cyrus Harrison Roberts and Laura Wilkerson Roberts on Chelf Ridge in Casey County, Kentucky.? ?
As high school sweethearts, Monty and Martha Ann Davis Lynn married on December 1, 1959, and just celebrated 65 years of marriage.?Known as Monty to friends and family, he is “Dad” to Deby (Jeff) Trueblood, Rhonda (Jim) Caldwell, and Michael Lynn.? ? He is most proudly known as PaPaw to his grandchildren Amanda Caldwell (Eric) Marin, Cassie (John) Fields, Chris (Ashley) Caldwell, Alyssa (Brandon) Potter, and Heather Lynn, and his great grandchildren Adelynn, Reagan, Brooks, Lucas, Hannah, George, and John Robert. PaPaw’s most important life’s work was to love his family while teaching the importance of work and family. There are fond memories of horses, goats, walks in the woods, rides on an ATV, his love for the lake, and always repairing, renovating, or building – all providing lots of fun and sometimes hilarious situations.
In addition to his wife and children, Monty is survived by his dearly loved sisters Laura Jadrich, Sharon Dees, Dorothy (Kerby) Carman, Sherry (Phil) Applegate, sister-in-law Millie Brown, as well as many nieces and nephews.? ? His wife’s sisters,Tommye Allen and Nancy Durham, hold a special place in his heart.
Monty is reunited in Heaven with his loving parents and grandparents, his sister Chelsie Hanks, brother Clarence Brown, brother Mike Lynn, daughter-in-law Rhonda Conrad Lynn, and granddaughter Heather Nicole Lynn as well as many dear family, friends and mentors.
Monty graduated from Casey County High School in June, 1959, and immediately moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, where he did a variety of jobs, finally working at Ford Motor Company until 1969.? ?In 1969, he made the life-changing decision to accept and follow the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal savior. With great joy and enthusiasm, he shared Christ with everyone he met, leading them to final salvation and eternal life.
In addition to his family, Monty’s true passions lie both in serving his Lord and Savior and in education.? ? Monty studied the Bible and developed his education by obtaining Certificate of Religious Education from Clear Creek Baptist School (Pineville, KY), Bachelor of Arts from Campbellsville College (Campbellsville, KY) and a Master of Arts in Education from Western Kentucky University (Bowling Green, KY) all while rearing a family, working full-time, and graduating with honors.? ? January 3, 1971, he was ordained as a Southern Baptist Minister by Pleasant Heights Baptist Church (Indianapolis, IN).
True to his servant’s heart, Monty, known as Bro. Lynn to his congregations, pastored the following churches:? ? Cloverleaf Baptist Church (Indianapolis, IN), Greencastle Baptist Mission (Greencastle, IN), Calvary Baptist Church (Harrodsburg, KY), Roachdale Baptist Church (Roachdale, IN), Oak Grove Baptist Church (Dunnville, KY), Chestnut Grove Baptist Church (Liberty, KY), and Poplar Grove Baptist Church (Liberty, KY).? ?
Over the years, Monty made many notable contributions to the organizations that he served. True to his desire for education and the Lord, he was instrumental in founding the Roachdale Baptist Academy, a church-operated K-12 school in Roachdale, Indiana where he was Head Administrator.? ? He served as Director of Missions for the Casey County Baptist Association because of his desire to inspire churches to build a strong fellowship with each other. He retired from Christian Appalachian Project as a Program Manager in the Human Services Housing Department.? ? Monty also served as a volunteer chaplain for Ephraim McDowell Regional Hospital.
On Sunday, December 15, 2024, the Lord called Monty home where he no doubt said, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
Arrangements are entrusted to Bartle Funeral Home (Liberty, KY) where the family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, from 6pm – 8pm and Thursday, 9am – 1pm. A Celebration of Life for James Monroe Lynn, Jr., will immediately follow at 1 pm on Thursday, December 19, 2024. Interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery (Liberty, KY).
