JEFFREY LAKE

 

Jeffrey Lake, of Liberty, passed away on Monday, August 26, 2024, in Danville, Kentucky. He was 62.

 

Born on July 7, 1962, in Saginaw, Michigan, he was a son of Margaret Hammond Baumann of Gladwin, Michigan, and the late Ronald Lake. Jeff was a mechanic. He loved flea marketing, thrifting, and lotto. He graduated from Gladwin High School and Mid Michigan College.

 

In addition to his mother,  he is survived by a son, Justin (Latrichia) Lake of Campbellsville; four grandchildren, Elijah Feese, Leilah Aud, Liana Lake, and Lillynn Lake; three brothers and their spouses, Leland Lake, Kevin Lake, and Todd Lake; two sisters and their spouses, Theresa Morris and Shannon Pavlicek; a special friend, Brad Feese; father-in-law, Ken Ellis; mother-in-law, Marilyn Ellis; and sister-in-law, Julie Ellis.

 

In addition to his father, he is preceded in death by his wife, Cheri Lake; daughter; Lacey Lake; step-father, Dennis Baumann; and brother-in-law, Kevin Ellis.

 

No services will be held at this time.

VIRGINIA HOGUE

 

Virginia Hogue 100, of Kings Mountain, KY, passed away on Saturday August 24th, 2024, at the U.K. Medical Center.

 

She was born in Casey Co., KY on June 16th, 1924, to the late Ernest and Retha Hixson Carman.

 

Virginia was the widow of Kenneth Hogue who passed away on November 4th, 1997.

 

Virginia was a homemaker and a member of Grove Ridge Baptist Church.

 

Survivors include: one daughter: Retha Jean Hogue, and a host of other family and friends.

 

In addition to her parents and spouse she was preceded in death by one brother: Dewayne Carman and an infant sister.

 

Visitation will be held 6:00 P.M. till 8:00 P.M. Tuesday August 27th, 2024, at Bartle Funeral Home Chapel.

APRIL WILKERSON

 

April Nicole Wilkerson 41, of Liberty, KY, passed away on Saturday August 24th, 2024, at the U.K. Medical Center.

 

She was born in Danville, KY, on September 16th, 1982, to Vickie Clements Crain and Robert Leon “Bob” Salyers.

 

April was a member of Danville Church of God and New Beginnings.

 

Survivors include: her mother: Vickie Clements-Crain of Liberty and (the late Lynn Crain), her father: Robert Leon “Bob” Salyers and (Kathy) of Frankfort, KY, one daughter: Kaitlyn Wilkerson of Liberty, one son: Dylan Keith Griffin of Liberty, one sister: Jessica and (Michael) Coffman of Liberty, niece Sara Coffman, nephew: Jake Coffman, and three step-sisters: Sonya and (Casey) Vaught of Yosemite, Tonya and (Tracy) Elliott of FL and Laura and (Seth) Hughes of Frankfort and a host of other family members.

 

Visitation will be held 5:00 P.M. till 8:00 P.M. Wednesday August 28th, 2024, at Bartle Funeral Home Chapel.  

 

Funeral Services will be held 1:00 P.M. Thursday August 29th, 2024, at Bartle Funeral Home Chapel. Bro Stacy Wilson and Bro. Bryan Montgomery officiating.

CARRIE JOINES

 

Carrie Lee Hash Joines, of Liberty, passed away on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at Summit Manor in Columbia. She was 98.

 

Born on May 28, 1926, in Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Lee Andrew and Mattie Parsons Hash. Carrie was formerly employed by Cumberland Production Credit. She was a member of Creston Missionary Baptist Church.

 

Carrie had the following siblings: Robert Alvin Hash, Preston Hash, Steve Hash, David Hash, Gwyn Hash, Mary Martin, Ethel Warner, Katherine Wooten, Irene Farmer, Vivian Sanders, and Jessie Halsey; a special niece, Patricia Diane (James) Pittman; a special nephew, Ernest (Rachel) Hash, whom she raised; and a host of special great nieces and nephews.

 

She is preceded in death by her husband, Mitchel Delmar Joines, who passed away on March 1, 1989.

 

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Phillip Drake officiating.

 

Burial will follow in Old Antioch Cemetery.

LEONARD WILSON

 

Leonard Leon Wilson 77, of Hamersville, OH, passed away on Sunday August 18th, 2024, at his residence.

 

He was born in Lawhorn Hill, KY, on October 25, 1946, to the late Aaron Dewitt Wilson and Lois Lucille Patterson Wilson. He was a Control Tech.

 

Leonard was the widower of Martha Hilda Wilson who passed away on March 8th, 2011.

 

Survivors include: one son: Scott Wilson of Hamersville, OH, two daughters: Melanie Hill of Hamersville, OH and Stephanie Manes of Richmond, KY, seven grandchildren: Kayla and Karley Wilson, Daniel, Eli and Zach Manes, Lilly Wilson and Laniey Hill, and one brother: Lowell and (Marlene) Wilson of Liberty.

 

Preceding him in death besides his parents and spouse was five siblings: Willard Wilson, Larry Wilson, Deva Dean Wilson, Josephine Phelps and Lois Ann Wilson.

 

Visitation will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday August 24th, 2024, at South Fork Separate Baptist Church.

GARLAND ROY

 

Garland Glen Roy, of Liberty, passed away on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at Casey County Hospital. He was 68.

 

Born on January 14, 1956, in Casey County, Kentucky, he was a son of the late Hubert and Moneda Emily Wilson Roy. He was the former pastor at 910 Full Gospel Church. He loved to hunt and fish.

 

Garland is survived by a step-daughter, Markeeta Wilson of Liberty; two step-grandchildren, Felisha Richardson and Ashley Meece; three step-great-grandchildren, Austin, Hunter, and Lily; three sisters, Jacklin Bernard of Liberty, Dixie Rigney of Winchester, and Sharon Dunbar of Russell Springs; and two sisters-in-law, Brenda Roy and Judy Roy.

 

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Fayrene Anderson Roy, who passed away on November 21, 2013; and two brothers, Ralph Roy and Kenneth Roy.

 

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at Roy Family Cemetery with Bro. Johnny Maupin  officiating.

 

Burial will follow in Roy Family Cemetery.

LARRY PRICE

 

Larry Reed Price, of Liberty, passed away on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at Russell County Hospital. He was 80.

 

Born on October 24, 1943, in Casey County, Kentucky, he was a son of the late Earl and Mildred Thompson Price. Larry was a farmer and formerly worked at Lily Gate. He enjoyed spending time with friends at McDonalds.

 

He is survived by a son, Clinton (Paula) Price; a stepdaughter, Shana Wethington; two grandchildren, Richard and Justin; two step-grandchildren, Robert and Brayden; two great-grandchildren, Greyson and Granger; and a sister, Valla Jean Price.

 

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Jo Ann Witt Price, who passed away in 1988; a sister, Jewell Lane; a brother, Earl Price, Jr.; and his significant other of twelve years, Donna Mae Stubblefield.

 

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Clark Durham officiating.

THELMA CHANSLER

 

Thelma Mae Stargle Chansler, of Windsor, died Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at the Jean Waddle Care Center in Somerset.  She was 75.

 

She was born in Pulaski County, October 15, 1948, to the late Evertt E. and Cora Rena Pevley Stargle.  Thelma was a homemaker and a wonderful caregiver. In early years, she worked in a factory, in fast food services and at the Hickory Hills Market.  She was a member of Jennie’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Windsor.

 

Thelma is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Riley Chansler; her daughters, Tammy Coe and Elizabeth Daniel; her brothers, Herman, Leonard, David and Jesse Stargle; and her sisters, Ruth Huff and Helen Luttrell.

 

She is survived by her daughter, Melissa Cochran (and Doug) of Liberty; her sons, J.L. Stargle (and Diane) of Russell Springs, Mike Stargle (and Nellie) of Russell Springs, Thomas Daniel of Windsor and Jesse Chansler of Windsor; her sister, Dorothy Stargle of Windsor; her seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Phill Jombs of Nirobi, Kenya.

 

Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Hershel Lawhorn officiating.

ROY FIGHTS

 

Roy Fights of Guntersville, AL 92, passed away on August 7, 2024. Roy was born on January 8, 1932, in Liberty, KY. He was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Nettie, four sisters and one brother. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis of 72 years and two sons David and Mark (Carol). Along with sister Peggy Simpson and two grandchildren.


He was drafted into the Korean War which enabled him to go to college on the GI Bill where he earned his Electrical Engineering Degree from the University of Kentucky. Much of his career at Redstone Arsenal was spent designing weapon systems for the US Army Missile Command. His proudest work achievement came with his involvement in the development of the Patriot Missile System as well as the Extended Air Defense Test Bed. Upon retiring from Redstone Arsenal, he worked for DESE Research, Inc. until his final retirement at the lake.


He was an avid pool player and competed in multiple leagues around the area. When he wasn't playing pool, he could be found tinkering in his garage working on various mechanical projects.
He attended Sweet Home Baptist Church and opened his home to several neighborhood Bible Studies. One of his favorite verses was Psalm 18:19 "he brought me out into a spacious place; He rescued me because he is delighted in me."

Donna Faye Woods 59, of Middleburg, KY, passed away on Friday August 9th, 2024, at the U.K. Medical Center.

 

She was born in Liberty, KY, on April 7th, 1965, to the late J.C. and Beulah Mae Phillippe Williams. She was a sales supervisor at Harbor Freight Tools in Somerset. She was saved and Baptized at the age of 13.

 

Donna was the widow of Thomas Woods who passed away on December 12th, 2008.

 

Survivors include: one son: Thomas Hagen Woods of Liberty, two sisters: Debbie and (Chester) Vaughn of Liberty and Iva and (Keith) Coffman of Hustonville, one brother: Johnny and (Brenda) Williams of Liberty and special sister: Lisa and (Steven) Peek of Kings Mountain.

 

Preceding her in death besides her parents and spouse was one son: Taylor Allan Woods, and one sister: Glenda Richardson.

Laura Mae Buck age 70, of Liberty, KY, passed away on Wednesday August 7th, 2024, at her residence.

 

She was born in Anderson, IN, on June 22nd, 1954, to the late Terry Ford and Mary Tittle. Laura was a former C.N.A.

 

Survivors include: her spouse: Ricky Verl Buck, two children: Christopher Buck of Richmond and Janell Militello of Port St. Lucie, FL, six grandchildren, two great grandchildren, three brothers: Tony Ford of Noblesville, IN, Bob Ford and Dane Ford both of Indiana and sister in law: Connie McCormick.

 

Preceding her in death besides her parents was one son: Benjamin Buck and one brother: Martin Boyd.

ZILPHA LAMAN

 

Zilpha Grace Laman 85, of Dunnville, KY, passed away on Wednesday August 7th, 2024, at the Jean Waddle Care Center.

 

She was born in Odessa, TX, on September 14th, 1938, to the late Nelson H. and Ethel J. Blanton Smelser. Grace was a former registered nurse.

 

Grace was the widow of Richard Allen Laman Sr.

 

Survivors include: one daughter: Suzanne Renee Langley of Thomaston GA, two sons: Guy Smelser Laman of Dunnville and Stephen Monroe Laman of Old Fields, W.V., nine grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.

 

Preceding her in death besides her parents and spouse was one son: Richard Allen Laman Jr., and four siblings: Onita, Juanita, Stella and Della.

BETTY PETTYJOHN

 

Betty Ann Pettyjohn age 71, of Liberty, KY, passed away on Tuesday August 6th, 2024, at her residence.

 

She was born in Cincinnati, OH, on February 18th, 1953, to the late Gilford Phelps and Edna Mae Banker Estes. Betty Ann was a former employee of Red Wing.

 

Betty Ann was the widow of Donald Pettyjohn who passed away on April 3rd, 2018.

 

Survivors include: four children: Lori Anne Criswell, Daphne Mae Chadwell and Marcus Lloyd Chadwell all of Liberty and Bobby Moore of Prince George, VA, nine grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, six siblings: Donna and (Shawn) Westfall of Goshen, OH, Carol and (Albert) Wimstatt of Springfield, Bob and (Kaye) Estes of Yosemite, Tom and (Teresa) Estes of Kings Mountain, Denise Spears of Liberty and Bill Estes of Liberty.

 

Preceding her in death besides her parents and spouse was two brothers: Jim Phelps and Jesse Estes.

DAVID GRIFFIN

 

David Griffin, of Liberty, passed away on Saturday, August 10, 2024, at Casey County Hospital. He was 35.

 

Born on March 16, 1989, in Lincoln County, Kentucky, he was a son of Eddie Griffin, Sr. and the late Brenda Louise Johnson Brock. David was a supervisor at the Casey County Detention Center. He loved farming, hunting, and fishing.

 

David is survived by his wife, Jessica Luttrell of Liberty, who he wed on October 31, 2017; four sons, David Allen Griffin, Clarence John Griffin, Andrew Ray Griffin, and Braxton Dale Griffin; three daughters, Elizabeth Renee Griffin, Skylar Leeann Griffin, and Addison Marie Griffin; two brothers, Eddie (Deanna) Griffin, Jr. and Daniel Griffin; and his best friend, Jamie Daniel.

 

The funeral service will be held at 12:00 P.M. on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Roger Stevens officiating.

 

Burial will follow in Bowmer Cemetery.

SUSAN BROWNING

 

Susan Marie Browning, of Liberty, passed away on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at Casey County Hospital. She was 64.

 

Born on November 19, 1959, in Madison, Indiana, she was a daughter of the late William “Bill” Samuel and Marilyn Meisberger Browning. Susan was a horse trainer and was very passionate about horse racing. She was of the Catholic faith.

 

She is survived by a son, Justin (Magan) Sullivan; two grandchildren, Kayln Fair and Aly Fair; a niece, Cristal (Terry) McClister; a great-niece, Haley Cook; and a great-nephew, Ethan McClister.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a sister, Carol Ann (the late Carson) Lawless.

Burial will be held privately at St. Magdalene Cemetery in Madison, Indiana, on Monday, August 12, 2024.

 

The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. on Sunday, August 11, 2024, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home.

Cruz Aaron Paz, 24 week old infant son of Tony and Erin Paz, passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, at Lake Cumberland Regional Medical Center in Somerset, KY. 

 

Cruz leaves behind his parents, Tony and Erin Redinger Paz; brothers, Benicio and Dominic Paz; sister, Celina Paz; maternal grandparents, Randy and Wendy Redinger; paternal grandfather, Jerry Tucker; and paternal grandmother, Olga Delgado.

ELIZABETH BARLOW

 

Elizabeth Karen Barlow age 86, of Louisville, KY, passed away on Thursday August 1st, 2024, at the home of her daughter Leslie in Louisville.

 

She was born in Yosemite, KY, on July 24th, 1938, to the late Arrid Keith Black and Maudie Goodman Black. Karen was a former billing clerk for the University of Louisville Psychiatric Services.

Karen was very active at Tombstone Community Church, singing in the choir, and the many projects and fundraisers of Women’s Fellowship.

 

Survivors include: her spouse: Tombstone Mayor Pro tem councilman Bill Barlow, three children: Randy Barlow of Bardstown, Steven and (Rachael) Barlow of St. Matthews, KY and Leslie and (Chris) Carder of Louisville, seven grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

 

Preceding her in death besides her parents was one sister: Hazel Vest and two brothers: Victor and Junior Black.

JAMES DURHAM

 

James Larry Durham, of Liberty, passed away on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. He was 82.

 

Born on April 15, 1942, in Casey County, Kentucky, he was a son of the late Clyde M. and Ada Marie Earls Durham. James was a retired switchboard operator for Kentucky Utilities. He served in the United States Air Force achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. He loved spending time with his cats, dogs, and most of all, his grandchildren. He also enjoyed drawing and driving his car.

 

James is survived by three sons, James (Debbie) Durham, John (Carla) Durham, and Robert Durham; two daughters, Elizabeth (Charles) Hartman and Barbara (Richard) Wilson; eighteen grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren.

 

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Carl Durham.

 

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, August 4, 2024, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Johnny Maupin officiating.

 

Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Danny Ray Hafley, of Casey County, passed away on Friday, August 2, 2024, at his residence. He was 65.

 

Born March 18, 1959, in Garrard Co., KY, he was a son of the late Jess and Elizabeth Wheeler Hafley. Danny was a long-time truck driver and a farmer. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, and the outdoors.

 

Survivors include his wife, Viola Bloodworth Hafley; sons, Jason Hafley, Randy Bloodworth, and Doug Norfleet; daughters, Anna Hafley and Melissa (and Jamie) King; brothers, Jerry (and Jean) Hafley, Robert (and Ada) Hafley, and Wayne (and Betty) Hafley; sister, Betty Medlin; and 4 grandchildren, Lucas, Vanessa, Brayden, and Braxton.

 

Danny was preceded in death by his parents; son, John Robert Price; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Hafley; and brothers, Darrell, Gene, Johnny, and Leon Hafley.

 

Funeral services will be at 1:00PM Monday, August 5, 2024, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home with Pastor Junior Skaggs and Bro. Jess Shoopman officiating.

 

Visitation will be from 11:00AM until 1:00PM on Monday at the funeral home.

JIM ELLISON

 

James “Jim” Ellison, of Liberty, passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, in Liberty. He was 76.

 

Born October 25, 1947, in Casey County, KY, he was a son of the late Kenneth and Maurine Hatter Ellison. Jim, as known by many, earned a master’s degree in education, and went on to retire as a teacher for the Casey County Board of Education. During his time at Casey County High School, he also served as Athletic Director. For the last few years, Jim worked at RJ’s Equipment Lot. In his early years, he owned a mobile home business and sold insurance. Jim was always active, whether it was camping, boating, golfing, reading, or just “piddling”, he stayed busy. When he was young, Jim attended Trace Fork Baptist Church and later in life, he attended Walnut Hill Separate Baptist Church.

 

Survivors include his dear wife, Karen Wright Ellison, whom he wed on February 25, 1983; daughter, Melissa (and Brad) Vaughn of Liberty; sons, Adam (and Katie) Ellison of Bowling Green and Jordan (and Coco) Ellison of Lexington; sister, Brenda Buis of Cincinnati, OH; 4 grandchildren, Stone, Major, Sophia, and Dominic; and one grandson on the way, Dawson.

 

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, June Byrd Rucker.

 

Funeral services will be at 11:00AM Friday, August 2, 2024, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Rodney Smith officiating.

 

Burial will follow in the Caney Fork Cemetery.

 

Visitation will be from 5-8PM Thursday and after 8:00AM Friday at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home.

 

Pallbearers will be Adam Ellison, Jordan Ellison, Stone Vaughn, Major Vaughn, Brad Vaughn, Keith Wright, Spencer Wright, Skyler Wright, and Dominic Frassinelli. Honorary pallbearers will be Tommy Weddle and Roger Carmicle.
