Born January 8th, 1931 near the Bee Lick community in Northern Pulaski County, Jim was the son of Cecil Gooch and Lola Ethel Wheeldon Gooch. Jim was the seventh of eight children, all of which have preceded him in death: Bernard, Bernice, Eunice, Glenn, Reba, Cecil Jr., and Billy Joe. They were a close family with strong work ethics and spiritual values, which they have gratefully passed to their children, grand and great-grand-children. Jim only completed school through the 8th grade, but he shared a talent for fixing mechanical things to keep the farm running like his brothers.
Jim entered the United States Navy on October 10th, 1951, originally assigned to the Beachmasters Unit 1 at Coronado in San Diego where he served two years. He was then assigned to serve on the USS Calvert APA32 stationed in San Diego for two tours in Korea, earning two combat stars. On the last tour, Jim served on the bridge of the Admiral’s Lead Ship as a part of Operation “Passage to Freedom”, which liberated over 300,000 immigrants from North to South Vietnam. During his service, Jim earned the Korean, Vietnam, and Navy/Marine Presidential Unit Citations. Jim exited the Navy Honorably as a Boatswain’s Mate 3rd Class on October 6th, 1955.
Jim married Thelma LaVerne Brown from the Dog Walk community in Lincoln County on February 25th, 1953 in Somerset while home on leave. She accompanied him back to San Diego as they started their new lives together. They moved to Goshen, Ohio upon his Navy discharge. Jim worked as a mechanic at a Dodge Dealership in Loveland and an American Motors Dealership in Montgomery Ohio alongside his brother Glenn.
They moved back to Somerset in 1971, and Jim began working in the Maintenance Department at Tecumseh Products Co as one of their first employees. He retired in 1995.
In retirement, Jim put his mechanical skills to great use both for himself and for others. He built his own tri-wheeled motorcycle-car which he enjoyed showing to others. He also was involved in building home and repair projects with First Baptist Church in Somerset, as well as projects for others and his family. He loved tending to his vegetable and flower gardens and feeding wild birds in his backyard. But the one activity Jim loved most of all was serving in the American Legion Post 38 Honor Guard, paying tribute to those in the Pulaski County area that had served their country, and to honor their service and legacies.
Jim was a Christian, an ordained deacon, and was a member of First Baptist Church in Somerset. Jim and LaVerne were also Charter Members of Beacon Hill Baptist Church in Somerset in the early 70’s. They both enjoyed assisting with countless baptisms during worship services for over 60 years.

LUCAS BUMGARDNER

With deep sorrow and sadness we mourn the passing of Lucas (Luke) Daniel Bumgardner, 41, or most beloved son, brother, uncle, family member and friend to many.  Luke peacefully left his earthly home surrounded by his family, in the early morning hours of July 19, 2022.
Lucas was born to parents Wade and Alicia on November 15, 1980 in Somerset, KY. He is survived by his parents Wade (Shelly) Bumgardner and Alicia (Dennis) Abbott, brothers Ethan (Casey) Bumgardner and Michael (Courtney) Harris, sisters Amanda Abbott and Morgan (Trevor) Castle, his maternal grandmother Shirley Langford, his paternal grandmother; Joy Randolph, nephews  Eric Smiley, Landon and Rayland Bumgardner, nieces  London and Lainey Castle and Sarah Smiley, an Aunt Edwinna Callahan (Billy),  Diane (Steve) Smiley and uncles Jack  (Kimberly) DeBord, Timothy (Maria Garnica) Langford and Jonathon (Naomi) Langford, paternal aunt Sandy (Scott) Boser, as well as a multitude of very special friends that became his “cheering support section” that are too numerous to list.
Luke is preceded in death by his paternal grandmother and grandfather Joyce DeBord and Bill DeBord,as well as Grandfather, Jackie Randolph, maternal grandmother, and grandfather Ray and Glydus Abbott, maternal grandfather John Langford, and an Uncle Forrest Langford.
He lived the majority of his life in Pulaski County, graduating from Pulaski County High School in 1999.  His work history included Somerset Frozen Foods, Science Hill waste management, and lastly a licensed Master Plumber.
One standout descriptor of Lucas was his exceptional intelligence and multi talent.  He was an avid reader, inquisitive debater, a curious mind for solving problems (taking apart anything mechanical) and lover of all animals and nature. All the dogs in our community knew that Luke kept doggie treats under his lawn chair.  When the neighbors walked their dogs, they would be “dragged across our lawn” for the dogs to get their doggie treats.  He had a “green thumb” and grew wonderful gardens.  He especially enjoyed providing fun activities for the children of his family and friends.
Luke enjoyed many hobbies such as making flies for fly fishing, golfing with his “golfing buddies”, and marksmanship with his “target practicing buddies” and belonged to the local Sportsman club.
Luke returned to his first love, Jesus Christ.  His relationship with his creator was so evident in his actions and words.  He became an example to many.  Luke was an active member of the Asbury Anglican Church and men’s ministry.  He especially enjoyed planning the men’s breakfasts and cookouts.  He was a “natural host and entertainer”.
If Luke could leave a message to those of us left behind it would be: “It is never too late to come to Christ.  Your past is in the past.  Learn to forgive yourself and others.  Make sure those you love know it. Live each day as if it is your last.  Leave nothing undone for tomorrow.”
Luke will be buried beside his Uncle Forrest Langford in Goodwater cemetery.  Reverends Ben Snyder, Hule Goddard and Rick Durrance will officiate. Following the cemetery gathering, Sunnyside Baptist Church is providing a meal for the family and friends.  Pallbearers: Tommy Head, Jack Debord, Zach DeBord, Michael Harris, Ethan Bumgardner, Landon Bumgardner Trevor Castle, Cory Hawkins. Honorary Pallbearers:  Rayland Bumgardner, Jonathon Langford, and Timothy Langford.

A visitation will be held Friday, July 22, 2022 From 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

CLIFFORD RANDALL III

At the behest of Clifford Randall, Sr. and with a promise of a new dress from the Fair Store; Betty Withers Randall named her second born son, Clifford Randall, III.

He arrived early on August 6, 1951 and was happily welcomed by his mother and father, Clifford Randall, Junior, and an eleven month old brother, Richard. Six years later, a baby sister, Jan, completed the family.

Clifford grew up in the Stonewall neighborhood of Lexington and attended Lafayette High School. He graduated in 1969 where he distinguished himself as a competitive athlete in baseball and football.

In the fall of 1969, he moved to Somerset with his grandmother Ella Withers while attending Somerset Community College. He also worked in the Randall family business, Cumberland Stave where they cut white oak into staves to ship to Brown Forman in Louisville for whiskey barrels. He later served as Vice President of the company.

On June 1, 1974, he married Gerrye Foster on a day he claimed had the hardest rainfall anyone had ever seen. Their union was blessed with a baby girl, Monica, born in November of 1977 and a baby boy, Greg, born in March of 1982.

In addition to a busy family life, Clifford enjoyed coaching YBL at the YMCA and was responsible for starting a very successful softball team, named Cumberland Stave. They won many local and area tournaments, despite their nemesis, Southern Tire.

His love for tennis began playing at "The Hole" but as he improved he traveled to local and state tournaments, and the Southerns, achieving high rankings. This prompted the origin of the Central Kentucky Tennis Series, where tournaments were hosted in Somerset and surrounding areas, and later in life, played competitively in Louisville during his tenure there.

Finding himself in a family of teachers, Clifford was inspired to complete his secondary teaching degree in history and political science. This led him to teach Advanced Placement US History, which he loved. Under his instruction, his students excelled with high scores on the AP exam. He chaired the Somerset High School and district social studies department.

Along with his teaching expertise, Clifford utilized his skills as an assistant basketball coach for the Briar Jumpers and the head tennis coach. He led his boys tennis teams to Kentucky High School state tournaments, always finishing in the top 5.

Clifford carried education across the world with his brother-in-law, Bob Tucker hosting trips to Europe with countless young people.

Education, coaching and mentoring young people is where Clifford found his stride, and he did it impeccably well. This was his arena and he was a star.

Clifford was humble and never sought a claim. His legacy is not of power or prestige, but that of people, students and the underserved. He treated everyone the same and touched many lives in all the ways that count.

Clifford served on various education committees, Somerset Little League Board and past president of Somerset Country Club. He worked tirelessly to perfect the grounds and the beauty of the club. His most recent and meaningful, becoming a member of First Baptist Church.

Clifford was predeceased by his mother; Betty Withers Randall Carmichael, his father; Clifford Randall, Jr. and step-father; William Carmichael.

He is survived by his wife, Gerrye Foster Randall, a daughter, Monica Jill Lackey (Chris) and a son, Gregory Foster Randall (Hailey); one brother Richard Hampton Randall; one sister, Janice Faith Trivico (Frank). Five grandchildren remain, grandsons; Asher Randall Smith and Griffin Thomas Smith; granddaughters; Lillian Grace Randall, Lola James Randall and Lucy Rose Randall.  Four nephews; Ryan Foster Tucker, Neal Robert Tucker, William Wesley Fox and Aaron Glenn Randall; one niece; Caitlin Cress Randall, brother and sister-in-law; Bob and Sherrye Tucker; one special  uncle; Hobe Withers (Margaret) and special aunt; Wanda Dick; step-mother Beverly Randall; step siblings; Mitch and John Diamond and Lisa Colyer.

Clifford Randall, III passed away on July 14th, 2022, at his residence.  He will be celebrated on Thursday, July 21st, at First Baptist Church, Somerset, Kentucky.  The family will receive friends from 11 - 2, with a celebration of life immediately following.  Mike Phelps will be officiating along with Reverend Ryan Coffey.
