VALERIE 'CISSY' WETHINGTON

 

Valerie “Cissy” Wethington, of Liberty, KY, passed away on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at her son’s home. She was 52.

 

Born December 18, 1970, in Taylor County, KY, Valerie was the daughter of the late James Patrick and Mable Darlene Mills Wethington. She was a hard worker and enjoyed shopping at Goodwill. Valerie was of the Catholic Faith.

 

She is survived by her sons, Justin (Scherriden) Cain, of Liberty and Brandon Cain, of Dunnville; her daughter, Miranda Cain, of Lebanon; her brother, Jeremy Wethington; one granddaughter, Jalynne Wells; special nephew, Brennan; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends also survive.

In addition to her parents, Valerie is preceded in death by her brothers, Tommy Wethington and James “PJ” Mills.

 

Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 30, 2023, at 1:00 P.M. at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home. Bro. David Smith will officiate.

 

Burial to follow in St. Bernard Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home.

BOB VANHOOK

 

Robert “Bob” VanHook, age 83, of Somerset, KY passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2023 at Hospice of Lake Cumberland Jean Waddle Care Center in the presence of his family. 

 

Bob was born June 4, 1940 in Somerset, KY to the late Marshall VanHook and Daisy Collins VanHook. He married Fonda Vaught VanHook on March 4, 1961 in Somerset, KY. The two enjoyed 62 years of marriage. They had two sons, Greg and Jeff VanHook. 

 

Bob was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.  His greatest love was his Savior, Jesus Christ and his family.

 

Bob loved his church and church family. Bob was a member of Cumberland Church of Christ. Bob owned Charles Chips franchise for 12 years and was known as “Charlie Chip” and from there retired from Frito Lay in 2003. Bob met countless friends through the years working his chip business that are still wonderful friends today. 

 

Bob enjoyed Tennessee Walking Horses. In his early and mid years, his beloved hobby was to train and show horses. In the summertimes you could find him in a show ring showing his prized Tennessee Walkers. This love has been carried down today to generations to his kids, grandkids, and even great grandchildren who are still showing horses today. His legacy and love for his horses still lives on through his children and grandchildren. 

 

Bob leaves behind his beloved wife, Fonda Vaught VanHook of Somerset; his youngest son, Jeff (Jill) Van Hook of Lawrenceburg, KY; his sister, Shelby Jean (Price Williams) of Somerset; five grandchildren, Tyler (Colleen) VanHook of Southern Shores, North Carolina, Brittany (Brandon) Baxter of Lawrenceburg, Drew VanHook of Nokesville, VA, Ryan Van Hook of Nokesville, VA, and Emma VanHook of Lawrenceburg, KY; and five great grandchildren, Landon VanHook, Brody Baxter, Jackson VanHook, Ben Baxter, and Colton VanHook. He is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Sara VanHook of Nokesville, VA. Bob is survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family. 

 

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Greg VanHook; brothers, Bill VanHook and James VanHook. 

 

Visitation will be on Thursday, November 30, 2023 from 11:00am until 1:00pm at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home, 1046 West Hwy 80, Somerset, KY 42503.

 

His funeral service will follow on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at 1:00pm at the Chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home with Bro. Alan Blackwell officiating.  

 

Burial will be at Science Hill Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Kevin Taylor, Don Moss, Pete VanHook, Brandon Baxter, Curt Dixon and Chris Jones.

TERRI CORNETT

 

Teresa “Terri” Gail Cornett, age 61, of Somerset, KY, passed from this life on Sunday, November 26, 2023 at her residence.

 

Terri was born on November 24, 1962 in Somerset, KY to the late Frank J. and Gilberta Bullock Cornett.  Terri was a devoted mother and grandmother.  She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. They brought tremendous joy to her life.  She also liked Native American history and enjoyed collecting Indian artifacts, turquoise jewelry, and turtles of all kinds.        

   

She is survived by two daughters, Cassandra (Blake) Cornett and Tabitha Richardson (Jason Sadler); a daughter-in-law, Rachael Farmer; seven grandchildren, Michael Quale, Savannah Richardson, Olivia Quale, Gabriel Heckert, Madison Farmer, Raiden Jones, and Sutton Richardson; and the father of her children, Jeffrey Farmer; her siblings, Steve (Betty) Cornett, Tina Meece (Leonard Matherly), and Tammy (David) Fisher; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.  Terri will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

 

Along with her parents Terri was preceded in death by her son, Jonathan L. Farmer.

 

Visitation will be on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 from 11:00am until 1:00pm at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home.

 

Her funeral service will follow on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at 1:00pm at the Chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home with Bro. Scott Hughes officiating.

Kenneth Duane Hamm, of Liberty, KY, passed away on Monday, November 27, 2023, at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital. He was 63.

 

Born November 5, 1960, in Louisville, KY, he was the son of the late Arnold Davis and Montie June Marple Hamm. He was formerly a brick mason. Kenneth was an animal-lover and a very social person. He enjoyed going to concerts and making friends.

 

Kenneth is survived by his daughter, Savanna Hamm (and Evan Viers); his brothers, Arnold Keith Hamm, Roger Gregory (Lisa) Hamm, Larry Steven Hamm, Barry Scott (Debbie) Hamm, and Thomas Edward (Paula) Hamm; and his sisters, Sheila Gail (Jerry) Keeling and Robin Ann (and Gary Smith) Hamm.

 

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at 1:00 P.M. at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Mike Miller officiating.

 

Burial will follow in Peavey Cemetery.

LOIS CUMMINS

 

Lois Cummins, of Middleburg, KY, passed away on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at UK Hospital. She was 89.

 

Born September 2, 1934, in Oswego, TN, Lois was the daughter of the late John L. and Katie Taylor Lawson. She was a devoted wife for 66 years of the late pastor, Bro. John Paul Cummins, who passed away March 15, 2020. Lois loved her grandchildren and enjoyed growing flowers. She was a longtime member of Middleburg Baptist Church.

 

Lois is survived by her sons, Robert (Donna) Cummins, of Hustonville, and Jerome (Brenda) Cummins, of Kings Mtn.; her daughter, Trish Cummins Nall, of Elizabethtown; brother, Billy Lawson, of Cincinnati, OH; her caregiver, Retha Atwood; grandchildren, Jessica (Cea) Carpenter, of Lexington, Jenna Nall, of Frankfort, Kenton (Abby) Nall, of Fayetteville, NC, Weston Nall, of Louisville, Justin (Emily) Cummins, of Willard, OH, and Allison Cummins, of Hustonville; and her great-grandchildren, Victoria (Jonathan) Berry, of Indianapolis, IN, and Gabriella, Elizabeth, and Kimberly Nall, all of Fayetteville, NC.

 

In addition to her parents, Lois is preceded in death by her husband, Bro. John Paul Cummins; brothers, Jack and Jerry Lawson; and her sisters, Sue Lawson, Shirley Carter, and Dorothy Brand.

GARY STOGSDILL

 

Gary Lynn Stogsdill, age 71, of Cannonball Road, Somerset, KY, passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at U.K. Hospital.

 

He was the son of the late Herman and Pauline Stogsdill, grandson of Victor and Ona Stogsdill of Somerset. He was married to Sharon Lynn (Meece) Stogsdill on December 11, 1971.

 

He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was a former employee of Crane Plumbing until it closed. But most of all, he was a saved Christian and a member of New Hope Baptist Church. He taught Sunday School and was Sunday School Superintendent at Piney Grove Baptist #1 for many years. He always made sure his children were in church. He was an ordained deacon.

 

He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon; two daughters, Sherry (Bro. Bill) Hall and Amber (Lucas) Scrimager; one son, Gary Joe Stogsdill; five grandkids, Thomas Seth and Elijah Aaron Stogsdill, Ethan Addison, Adilynn Marie, and Breanna Rose Scrimager. He had special nicknames for them: Seth, Elijah, and Ethan were called "Bub", Adi was called "Baby Girl", and Bre was "Knot Head".

His son-in-laws, Bill and Lucas were treated just like his own sons. He is also survived by four sisters, Mary Lou (Clint) Ridner, Sandra Stogsdill, Brenda (Jerry) Miller, and Judy (Doug) Ridner; one brother, Jerry (Emmie) Stogsdill; one sister-in-law, Kathy Akin; two brothers-in-law, Lincoln (Buddy) Meece and Dannie Jones; and many nieces, nephews, and a dear friend, Ed Blake.

 

He is preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, Lincoln & Anna Meece; two brothers, Mitchell and Charles Stogsdill; three brothers-in-law, Butch Weatherford, Bobby Akin, and Lloyd Smith; three sisters-in-law, Sharon E. Stogsdill, Melda Meece Jones, and Brenda Smith; and one sister, Connie Lay.

 

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at 10:00 AM in the chapel of Pulaski Funeral Home with Bro. Dalous Sears and Bro. Bill Hall officiating. 

 

The family will receive friends, Tuesday, November 28, 2023 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Pulaski Funeral Home.

LORETTA SLAGLE

 

Loretta June Slagle, age 78, passed away peacefully at her residence on November 25, 2023 surrounded by her family. Loretta was born on August 14, 1945, in Somerset, KY to Elizabeth Hall Denham and Johnnie Ray Hall. She was a remarkable woman who dedicated her life to caring for others as a Licensed Practical Nurse and later as a Case Manager at Lake Cumberland Area Development District. She married her loving husband, Don Slagle, on June 5, 1964, and spent a wonderful 49 years together until his passing in 2013.

Loretta will forever be remembered as a great listener, always ready to lend an ear and offer support to those in need. Her compassionate nature made her an exceptional caregiver. Whether it was in her professional or personal life, Loretta's kindness touched the lives of countless individuals.

In her free time, Loretta found joy in quilting and spent many hours creating beautiful pieces that will be cherished by her loved ones. She also loved spending time with her family and created lasting memories while humming songs in the kitchen.

Loretta is survived by her loving children, Sherry Bailey and Donnie & (Tammy) Slagle; five grandchildren, Christopher & (April) Clough, D.J. Slagle, Thomas & (Kasey) Slagle, Michael Green, and Holly Green; and three great-grandchildren: Harrison Slagle, Charlie Clough, and Elise Slagle. She is also survived by her sister, Juanita & (Cecil) Helton; brother, Steven & (Sarah) Hall; sister, Norma & (Mike) Garner; brother-in-law, Arthur Wells; sister-in-law, Dee & (Gary) Foster; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Elizabeth Hall Denham and Johnnie Ray Hall; step-father, Garvel Denham; husband, Don Slagle; sister, Donna Wells; brother-in-law, David Slagle; and sister-in-law, Bonnie Slagle.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM at Pulaski Funeral Home.

A graveside service will follow at Bronston Cemetery.

Loretta June Slagle will be fondly remembered for her caring nature, her deep love for her family and friends, and her unwavering commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of others. JODY SPEARS

 

Mary Jo "Jody" Vaughn Spears passed away Sunday November 26,2023 at the Jean Waddle Care Center, Hospice of Lake Cumberland. She was 88 years old. Jody was born on July 25,1935 to William H. & Grace Delk Vaughn who proceeded her in death.


Jody was a member of West Somerset Baptist Church. Jody is survived by two children. Tracy (Rhonda) Spears and Donna Coomer, both of Somerset, Kentucky. She also has six grandchildren, Mackie (Todd) Wilson, B.J. (Jessica) Coomer of Somerset, Ky. Tyler Spears and Kyle Spears Somerset, Ky., Scott Spears, Evansville, IN and Emily Spears, Alcoa, TN. Eight great grandchildren also survive, Logan and Braden Lawson, Donovan and Abby Coomer, Jolene Spears and Grayson, Nolan and Harper Spears.

 

In addition to her parents, she was proceeded in death by five siblings, Buddy Vaughn, Lida May Short, Ruth Ann Smith, Jane Marcum and Betty Jean Calhoun.

 

The family would like to thank those who provided care at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, Cumberland Nursing and Rehabilitation, and especially Hospice of Lake Cumberland.

 

Graveside services will proceed the burial at Somerset Cemetery on Thursday November 30, 2023 at 2:30 p.m. with Bro. Chris Neikirk officiating. Friends and family are welcome to attend the services.

JERRY WILSON, JR.

 

Gerald N. “Jerry” Wilson, Jr., passed away on Friday, November 24, 2023 in Somerset, KY surrounded by his family at the age of 56.

 

He’s remembered for his love of cars, being outside, and tinkering on computers.  His love for the Dallas Cowboys ran bone deep and you could always catch him in front of the TV when they were playing.  

 

Jerry is survived by his wife of 30 years, Monica Wilson of Nancy; his daughters, Elysia, Tatum and her wife Taylor, and Tiffany and her husband Joshua; three grandchildren, Landon, Eleanor and Elaina; and a son-in-law, Jeremy.

 

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Caitlyn; his grandpa; and his father.

 

Jerry’s wishes were to be cremated and placed with his loved ones in North Carolina and Arizona.

LUCILLE TROXTELL

 

Frances “Lucille” Troxtell, age 83, of Ferguson, KY, passed away on November 21, 2023 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

 

Lucille was born on July 4, 1940 in Crab Orchard, KY to the late Vernon Ragle and Katie Bunch Ragle.  She married Charlie B. Troxtell on November 18, 1959 in Somerset and they had four children, Joy, Charles, Mark and Nancy.   Lucille was a devoted wife, mother and grandparent. She loved her family, she loved God and church.  Lucille attended Old Fashion Faith as long as her health permitted.  She loved cookouts, fellowship at church, flowers (red roses were her favorite) and she enjoyed gardening.  Lucille had the most beautiful smile; she was loving and caring to everyone and was a giving person.  She enjoyed going with Charlie and watching him fish.   At 83 years old she had lived a full life.  

 

She leaves behind her children, Joy (and Rodney) Turner of Somerset, Charles W. Troxtell of Ferguson and Nancy (Johnny) Brown of Bronston; two brothers, Jr (Kathy) Ragle of Bronston and Johnny (Judy) Ragle of Corbin; three sisters, Betty Hughes of Bronston, Kathy Ping of TX and Debbie Carrender of Bronston; five grandchildren, Michelle Stevens, Jaime (Jimmy) Glover, Rodney E. (Kim) Stevens, Amber (Josh) Smith, Ashley (Brandon) Vanhook; two step grandchildren, Brandon Turner and Russell Turner; thirteen great grandchildren, Mikey Moses, Zach (Bobby) Moses, Joy (Chase) Moses, Zoey Webb Glover, Charlie Smith, Langdon Smith, Christine Cook, Chloe Cook, Kaden Vanhook, Ethan Vanhook, Chris Stevens, Josh Stevens and Brianna Stevens; three step great grandchildren, Noah Milo, Lucas Turner and Kylie Smith; six great great-grandchildren, Reed Stevens, Kaden Moses, Colton Moses, Fraya Stevens, Jaden Smith and Cameron Smith; her best friend, Ethel Cogdill; extended family members, friends and neighbors who are saddened by her passing. Lucille will be missed by all who knew and loved her. 

 

Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie B. Troxtell, who preceded her on November 20, 2002; one son, Mark Troxtell; an infant sister; two brothers, Melvin (Mary) Ragle and Harold Ragle; and one brother-in-law, Bertie Hughes. 

 

Visitation will be on Monday, November 27, 2023 from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home.

 

Her funeral service will Be held on Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at 11:00am at the Chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home with Bro. Rudy Branscum officiating.  

 

Burial will be at Liberty Cemetery in Kidder, KY.

DAVID HASTE

 

David Earl Haste, of Mannsville, KY, passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at Lexington VA Healthcare Center. He was 77.

 

Born February 16, 1946, in Casey County, KY, he was the son of the late Henry Earl and Gladys Martin Haste. David was a United States Army veteran and enjoyed fishing.

 

He is survived by his sister, Jewell (Jerry) Flake, of Franklin, IN, and his sister-in-law, Alma Joyce Haste, of Greenwood, IN.

 

In addition to his parents, David is preceded in death by his brothers, Lowell Haste and Philip Q. Haste.

 

David’s wishes for cremation have been honored. His urn will be buried at Poplar Springs Cemetery.

BARBARA GRIBBINS

 

Barbara Joyce Brady Gribbins, of Stanford, KY, passed away on Monday, November 20, 2023, at Liberty Care Center. She was 88.

 

Born April 8, 1935, in Lebanon, KY, she was the daughter of the late George Washington and Charlie Mae Riley Brady. Barbara was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing and gardening. She loved her grandchildren and was of the Baptist faith, formerly attending Harris Creek Baptist Church.

 

Barbara is survived by her son, Joseph Gribbins Jr. of Liberty; her daughters, MaDonna (Mark) Fillipi of Virginia and Valerie (Greg) Sanders of Liberty; daughter-in-law, Sheila Gribbins; six grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

 

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Leslie Gribbins Sr.; her son, Leslie Michael Gribbins; her grandson, Robert Peavey, and her brothers, George and Richard “Dick” Brady.

 

Funeral services will be held privately.

MICHAEL FRANKLIN

 

Michael “Mikie” Franklin, of Kings Mountain, Kentucky, passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2023. He was 54.

 

Born April 5, 1969, in Casey County, Kentucky, Mikie was the son of the late Michael Franklin and Francis Buis Simpson. Mikie was a U.S. Army veteran and a welder, having formerly worked at Tarter’s. He enjoyed riding horses.

 

Survivors include his wife, Shelia Franklin Lane; daughter, Hailey (Jacob) Hatter; step-son, Robert (Angel) Murphy; step-daughter, Brandy Keith; three grandchildren, Skylar, Liam, and Wyatt; as well as three step-grandchildren, Timothy, Axton, and Marley.

 

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at Poplar Hill Cemetery at 2:00 P.M.

 

Burial will follow in Poplar Hill Cemetery.

 

There will be no visitation.

MARGUERITE OVERSTREET

 

Marguerite Cummins Overstreet, of Danville, formerly of Liberty, passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2023, in Lexington, Kentucky. She was 86.

 

Born October 30, 1937, in Casey County, Kentucky she was the daughter of Millie Emerson Murphy and the late Hillary Ray Murphy. She was a homemaker and a seamstress. Marguerite was a former consultant for Princess House Crystal and enjoyed yard sales. She was a member of Westside Christian Church.

 

Marguerite is survived by her mother, Millie Emerson Murphy; her daughters, Carla (Larry) Simpson of Stanford, and Trena (the late Vernon) Rogers of Perryville; two grandchildren, Megan (Andrew Vanhook) Simpson and Matt (Meagan) Simpson; as well as two great-grandchildren, Julie and Harper.  

 

In addition to her father, Marguerite is preceded in death by her husbands, John Cummins and Russell Overstreet, and her sister, Jewell Land.

 

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 25, 2023, at 11:00 A.M. at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home. Bro. Marty Shackleford will officiate.

 

Burial will follow in Whited Cemetery.

MATTHEW REESE

 

Matthew Dennison Reese, of Richmond, passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at the UK Hospital in Lexington. He was 37.

 

Born February 27, 1986, in Lexington, KY, he is the son of Dennis and Janet Smallwood Reese. Matthew had an immense love for frogs. He enjoyed riding his go-cart and golf cart. He loved mowing grass, particularly on his John-Deere lawnmower.

 

Survivors include his parents, Dennis and Janet Smallwood Reese; maternal grandmother, Lily Ingram; paternal grandfather, Richard Bostic; and a host of other family and friends also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Friday, November 24, 2023, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home with Bro. James Lunsford officiating.

 

Burial will follow in the Bowmer Cemetery in Casey County.

 

Visitation will be from 12 Noon until time of services on Friday at the funeral home.

 

ELIZABETH KING

 

Elizabeth Gaye King, age 80, of Glasgow, KY, passed away on Wednesday November 15th, 2023, at Glasgow State Nursing Facility. She was born March 29th, 1943, in Liberty, KY, a daughter of the late Dallas Cecil Stafford and Ethel Estes King Stafford.

 

Elizabeth was the widow of Winfred Dalton King who passed away on September 11, 2021.

Elizabeth was a C.N.A. working at hospitals in Louisville and Taylor Co. and a member of Lowell Avenue Baptist Church in Campbellsville.

 

Survivors include: One Son: John Marshall King of Boston, MA, and Two Brothers: Dallas Ray and (Melody) Stafford of Owenton, KY and Larry and (Debbie) Stafford of Liberty.

 

Visitation will be held 11:00 A.M. Tuesday November 21st, 2023, at Bartle Funeral Home Chapel.  

 

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday November 21st, 2023, at Bartle Funeral Home Chapel. Bro. Dwight Coffman officiating.

SANDRA PITTMAN

 

PITTMAN Sandra K, 76, joined her parents (George Monroe and Iva Dean Pittman) and her brother-in-law (Clarence Henley) with our heavenly Father on Monday, Nov 13, 2023.

 

Sandy is survived by her four siblings, Dr. Mike Pittman (Jeryl), Debbie Mantle (Kevin), Yvonne Henley and Greg Pittman. Sandy was a devoted mother to her 3 M’s: Michelle, Melissa and Melodie (Jason), a loving Nana to her 4 grandchildren: Kayla (Alex), Ian, Will, Kate and 2 great granddaughters: Arya and Avery.

 

She was a fun loving, adventurous Nana and Aunt Sandy to all her nieces and nephews. She loved her sweet Jesus, her family and her country; a true patriot and fighter for freedom. We know she’s in heaven playing Bingo and dancing with Elvis.

 

Private Services were held with burial at Pittman Memorial Gardens in Liberty, KY. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Wounded Warrior Project.

JERRY BRACKETT

 

Jerry Wallace Brackett, age 73, of Liberty, KY, passed away on Friday November 10th, 2023, at Baptist Health. He was born April 23rd, 1950, in Casey Co., KY, a son of the late Wallace Speed Brackett and Marie Matherly Brackett.

 

Jerry was a former Liberty Police Officer and a truck driver.

 

Survivors include: One Son: Mark and (Debbie) Brackett of Liberty, One Grandson: Spencer and (Courtney) Brackett of Liberty, Two Great Grandchildren: Sadie Ruth and Levi Brackett, and Three Sisters: Brenda and (Tom) May of Statesville, N.C., Anita Price of Danville and Winna and (Kevin) Short of Monticello.

 

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death One Grandson: Bradley Marcus Brackett and Two Brothers: Keith and Jeff Brackett.

 

Visitation will be held 4:00 P.M. Tuesday November 14th, 2023, at Bartle Funeral Home Chapel.

JEREMY VANNOY

 

Jeremy Ray Vannoy, of Nicholasville, lost a long hard-fought battle with cancer and peacefully entered his eternal home on Thursday, November 9, 2023, after recently being saved. He was 49.

 

Born February 7, 1974, in Heerlen, Netherlands, he is the son of James Gerald and Phyllis Ruth Scalf Vannoy. Family, especially his boys, and friends were the most important things to him. He was a jokester and fun-loving. He was affectionately known as “Funcle” to his beloved nieces and nephews. He enjoyed playing basketball, listening to music (favorite: Beatles), playing video games, reading (esp. Stephen King), and watching Oklahoma Sooners football. He loved animals and greatly missed his pet dog, Izzy. He was a hard worker and finished his work career at NSG in Versailles, Ky.

 

Survivors include his parents, Gerald and Phyllis Vannoy; sons, Mason Ray Vannoy and Peyton James Vannoy; brother, Jimmy (and Jennifer) Vannoy; sister, Missy (and Derek) Benge; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Kenny Blevins and Bro. Roger Price officiating.

 

Burial will follow in the Cold Springs Cemetery.

 

Visitation will be from 5-8PM on Tuesday at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home.

GENE EMERSON

 

Glen E. “Gene” Emerson, of Liberty, KY, passed away on Thursday, November 9, 2023. He was 88.

 

Born July 13, 1935, in Casey County, KY, he was the son of the late Sherman and Carrie Sandusky Emerson. Gene was a United States Army Veteran and a retiree of Ford Motor Company. Gene was married to the late Loretta Belle Wyatt Emerson, who passed away March 13, 2003. He was a member of the Colerain Masonic Lodge #759, Oleika Shriners, and Thomas Ridge Church.

 

Gene is survived by his son, Phillip (Terry) Emerson, of Cincinnati, Ohio; his brother, Rex (Connie) Emerson, of Oxford, Ohio; his grandchildren, Nichole and Loren Emerson; his special friend, Tommye Allen; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

 

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Loretta Emerson; his son, Stephen W. Emerson; his brothers, Omer Coy Emerson, Jesse Franklin Emerson, and Rollin Lyle Emerson; and his sisters, Vatus Gibson, Lois Wells, and Jewell Smith.

 

Funeral services will be held Monday, November 13, 2023, at 1:00 P.M. at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Hershel Lawhorn and Bro. Darrell Karnes officiating.

 

Burial will follow in Whited Cemetery with military rites by the Casey County Honor Guard.

DELORESE "DEE" DAVIS

 

Delorese “Dee” Davis, age 84, of Somerset, KY, passed away on Monday, November 6, 2023 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

 

Dee was born on March 29, 1939 in Dayton, OH to the late Claude Cusick Ankney and Alice Dolores Meyer Ankney.  She was a member of Victory Christian Fellowship and was active in the Greeter’s Ministry.  Dee was involved in the Chamber of Commerce for years.  She taught sewing and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.  

 

She is survived by one son, Albert George (Jennifer) Siewe, IV of Mason, OH; one brother, Robert Ankney of Houston, TX; three grandchildren, Albert (Albie) G. Siewe, V of Mason, OH, Chole Alice Siewe of Mason, OH and Nicole (Randy) Waters of Lima, OH; four great grandchildren, Myson Burton of Somerset, Alexis Waters, Lincoln Waters and Quinton Waters all of Lima, OH; several nieces and nephews including a special niece, Kaydee Gregory of Somerset; her extended family, James (Janie) Pohlman of Sidney, OH and Andy Pohlman of Dayton, OH; and special friends, Carol (Eugene) Rogers of Somerset and Brenda (Felix) Peckinpaugh of Somerset.

 

Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Corliss Eugene “Cork” Davis, whom she married on June 20, 1981 in Dayton, OH and he preceded her on April 24, 1999; one daughter, Mary Alice Siewe; one son, Andrew Aikmen; two brothers, Donald Ankney and Hugh E. Smith; and one sister-in-law, Carol Ankney.

 

A Celebration of Life Service for Dee will be held by the family at a later date.  Inurnment will take place at Glen Cemetery in Port Jefferson, OH.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy be made to Victory Christian Church.

DAVID WETHINGTON

 

David Allen Wethington, of Liberty, KY, passed away on Monday, November 6, 2023. He was 29 years old.

 

David was born January 25, 1994, in Taylor County, KY, to James and Marsha Knifley Wethington. David worked as a tree trimmer for Asplundh. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and four-wheeling. More than anything, David Allen loved being outdoors.

 

David is survived by his parents, James and Marsha Knifley Wethington, of Liberty; his son and daughter; his sister, Cindy (Tyler) Gillock, of Knifley; his niece and nephew, Destiny and Dylan Rhoades; his girlfriend, Shelby Taylor; and Shelby’s son, River Taylor.

 

A funeral service will be held Thursday, November 9, 2023, at 11:00 A.M. at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home.

 

Bro. Alex Cox will officiate with burial to follow in St. Bernard Cemetery.

DONALD MITCHELL

 

Donald Anthony Mitchell, age 81, of Dayton, Ohio, passed away on Friday, November 3, 2023.

 

He was born in Key West, FL on January 18, 1942 to his parents, Ernest & Kathleen (Algreen) Mitchell.  He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Florence Henson; brothers, Ernest Mitchell Jr and Kenneth Mitchell; ex-wife, Janette Sharon (Weekly).

 

He retired from KK Motorcycle Supplies, E 3rd St, Dayton after 30+ years. Donald was an avid car and motorcycle enthusiast and collected buttons in later life. He loved Zydeco music, Marshall football, and cats. He left his cat (Baby) to his friend Will.  

 

Survivors include his son, Donald (Don) Anthony Mitchell, Jr. of Toledo, OH; nieces, Kathy (Henson) Stinson and Bonnie (Henson) Roderer; nephews, David Henson and William (Bill) Henson; close friend, Will Merkes.

 

Funeral service will be Thursday, November 9, 2023, at 3:00PM at First Baptist Church, Liberty KY, followed by burial at Fair Cemetery in Pricetown, KY.

 

There will be visitation from 2-3PM on Thursday at the First Baptist Church.

LAVERN POLSTON

 

Lavern Stephens Polston, age 89 of Plainfield, IN, formerly of Somerset, passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2023  in Plainfield.  

 

Lavern was born on August 27, 1934 in Jabez, KY to the late Veno Stephens and Lola Wilson Stephens.  On December 19, 1953, Lavern married her husband, Arlo Kimball Polston in Ringgold, GA and they shared 62 years of marriage prior to his passing in 2015.   She was a member of Christian Home Church,  Jabez, KY.  Her Christian faith and devotion to her church was of utmost importance to her.   Lavern loved Gospel Music and she enjoyed singing at the nursing homes and in church.  She retired from American Mutual Life Insurance in Indianapolis, IN before relocating back to Somerset.  She was also employed by WalMart for thirteen years.

 

Lavern was preceded in death by her parents, Veno and Lola Wilson Stephens; her husband, Arlo Polston; and one sister and brother-in-law,  Irene and Marvin McGowan; her brother-in-law, Grover Leonidus McGowan; and her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Flonnie and Arvil Polston.

 

Survivors include her sister, Christine McGowan of Plainfield, IN; her nephew, Gregory (Beverly) McGowan of Plainfield, IN; her niece, Vickie (Kurt) Spoerle of Carmel, IN; four great nieces, Lindsey (Jason) Catellier, Valerie (Gregory) Horn, Melanie (Nicholas) Lewis-Walls,  and Ella (Michael) Minatel; three great nephews, Sam (Natalie) Spoerle, Stephen (Shannon) McGowan, and Philip Spoerle;  five great great nieces, Allison, Camryn, Delaney, Claire and Kaleigh; and seven great great nephews, Logan, Jacob, Clayton, Garrett, Lucas, Leo and James; and a host of nieces and nephews on the Polston side whom she loved dearly.

 

Visitation for Lavern Polston will be on Friday, November 3, 2023 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home, 1046 West Hwy 80, Somerset, KY 42503.  

 

Her funeral service will follow at 11:00 am at the Chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home with Reverend Ritchie Curtis and Reverend Mark Polston officiating.  

 

Burial will be at Mill Springs National Cemetery, Nancy, KY.
