On November 26, 2022 at approximately 11:28 P.M. EST, Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 15 Troopers responded to a single vehicle injury collision on KY 90 in Metcalfe County.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Wilmer Alexander Alonzo Canales, age 38 of Summer Shade, was traveling east on KY 90 in a 2000 Chevrolet S-10 when he lost control and left the roadway.  Once Mr. Canales left the roadway, he struck an earth embankment and went airborne before coming to final rest in a private drive.    

Mr. Canales was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Metcalfe County Coroner. 

KSP Post 15 Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Metcalfe County Sheriff's Office, Metcalfe County Fire and EMS, Metcalfe County Rescue Squad, and Metcalfe County Coroner. The collision remains under investigation by Trooper Matthew Lee.

A Casey County man arrested after causing a distrubance in the early morning hours Friday.

Deputy Jayson Grider with Casey County Sheriff's Office responded to the call shortly before 2am, about 13 miles east of Liberty on Clear Branch Rd.  While en route to the scene, the caller stated the man was in a 2004 Chevy truck, tearing up the yard and causing damage to the property owner, Eddie Richardson's Chevy truck.

Upon arrival, deputies learned that 22 year old Dakota J. Smithers, of 175 Neff Rd., Liberty, had flipped his truck and fled on foot. He was located about a half mile from the residence.

Mr. Smithers stated that he was too drunk to perform field sobriety tests, and admitted to drinking Fireball liquor and beer. The arrest citation states Smithers had poor balance, slurred speech, and a strong odor of alcohol. He also caused damage to Mr. Richardson's mobile home by punching holes in the drywall and busting the glass in the storm door.

Smithers was lodged in the Casey County Jail on charges of DUI, Reckless Driving, & Criminal Mischief-1st Degree.

Judge Dial says a continuing issue with Patsy Rife Ridge Road will require some significant repair which will probably start in the spring.

Also under road business, Casey Creek Road has been closed for a bridge replacement for some time. Judge Dial says that will reopen as of Monday.

He also informed the magistrates that representatives from FEMA will visit Casey County on December 2 to conduct some site inspections for possible road repairs due to recent flooding.

Kentucky State Police, Post 11 London has been contacted by concerned citizens regarding a phone scam in our area. Citizens have received calls from someone stating they are a trooper with KSP and there is civil litigation against them. The caller then demands an immediate payment over the phone to avoid being arrested.

The other scam is a caller appears to be targeting registered sex offenders and requesting them send $450-$1000 for a DNA test or they will face arrest!

Both of these are SCAMS!

Law enforcement will NOT call you to inform of an arrest warrant. Furthermore, these agencies will not ask anyone for money, banking/personal information or make threats of arrest.  Of course, you may also contact the specified agency yourself if you are in any doubt.

KSP would like to remind everyone that we do not call to collect funds or threaten arrest for unpaid fines or taxes. Also, never share your Social Security Number or other personal information online or by phone.

To help as a guide, below are the “Top 10 Tip-offs to a Rip-off”.

1.) High pressure sales or frequent calls are signs that it’s a scam.

2.) If the caller demands an immediate decision, it’s likely a rip-off.

3.) People requesting a credit or debit card or any banking account information.

The Jamestown Police Department is investigating a hit-and-run accident that occurred approximately 7:08 a.m. at the intersection of East Cumberland Avenue and Valley Drive.

The vehicle in question is described as a red Chevy Cruz with severe front end damage.

A Russell County couple arrested on burglary charges in Adair County.

On Tuesday afternoon, Adair County 911 received a call from a residence in the 5000 block of E. KY80. The caller reported someone shooting at his house and then broke into his camper.

Adiar County Sheriffs Deputies found a man and woman were still inside the camper, but the two refused commands to come out.

Additional units from the Columbia Police and KSP arrived on the scene. Sheriff Brockman and CPD Officer Jimmy Luttrell made entry into the camper and located the pair hiding in the bedroom.
The couple were taken into custody without further incident.

22 year old Mathew Boutwell, of Russell Springs, is charged with Wanton Endangerment 1st Degree (2 counts), Burglary 1st/3rd degree, and Theft by Unlawful Taking (Firearm).

Subena Shonta Ramirez, 25, also of Russell Springs, is charged with Burglary 2nd degree.

Both were lodged in the Adair County Jail.

The investigation is ongoing by Sheriff Josh Brockman.
 

The Kentucky State Police, London Post is investigating a fatal collision that occurred on West KY Highway 635 in the Since Hill area of Pulaski County at approximately 09:40 am Monday morning.

The initial investigation indicates that a 2000 Peterbilt Semi operated by Fred Haste JR., 66 years old of Bethelridge, KY, was traveling west on KY 635 when he lost control of his vehicle and collided into a 2015 KIA operated by Benjamin L. Durham III, 61 years old of Danville. Mr. Haste sustained fatal injuries in the collision and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Pulaski County Coroner’s Office.  Mr. Durham was transported to the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, where he was treated for non-life threating injuries.

Drugs and alcohol are not suspected factors in the crash. The investigation is being conducted by Kentucky State Police Post 11 Trooper Shane Bowling.  He was assisted at the scene by Post 11 Personnel, Pulaski County EMS, Since Hill Fire Department, and the Pulaski County Coroner.

Liberty City Council met in regular session Monday.

The Council approved a motion to advertise for bids for the Napier Street Bridge project, which will be in the Casey News this week.

The water tank on Dry Ridge has been emptied and repairs are under way. Work is also on-going to camera the sanitary sewer lines in the city. One significant issue is a storm sewer is connected to the sanitary sewer system.

Council Member Richard Montgomery made a motion to give all city employees (exept Police) a 5% raise, beginning January 1st. The increase would be off-set by an employee who is leaving at the end of the year. The Motion failed due to lack of a second.

The Council was presented an Alcohol Beverage Control Ordinance from a similar sized city. Concerns were heard from a resident, and a discussion was held on changes the city should make. First Reading will be held on Dec. 5th.

A representative from the Corps of Engineers will present the flood study results at next month's regular meeting, scheduled for Dec. 12th.

A Taylor County Man arrested over the weekend on multiple drug charges.

In the early morning hours Sunday, Campbellsville Police conducted a traffic stop on E. Broadway. They determined the driver was under the influence of drugs.  

When Officers searched the vehicle, they found approximately 90 grams of Methamphetamine, 2 pounds of Marijuana, multiple pills, mushrooms, 2 handguns, along with drug paraphernalia.

35-year old Nicholas Zunker of Campbellsville was lodged in the Taylor County Jail on several Drug Trafficking charges, DUI, No registration plates, No insurance, Drug Parapheranlia, & Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

On November 11, 2022 just before 10:00 p.m. Kentucky State Police, Post 7 in Richmond received a call of a single vehicle collision with possible entrapment on Old Richmond Road near the Clays Ferry Bridge.

The initial investigation indicates a 2017 Nissan Altima, operated by a 17 year old juvenile of Lexington, KY, was traveling north on Old Richmond Road (KY2328). The juvenile lost control of the vehicle, causing it to go over a steep embankment, and submerge in the Kentucky River. Two juvenile passengers were able to exit the vehicle but were unable to rescue the operator. Both juveniles were taken to the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Richmond Fire Department along with the Madison County Fire Department, Fish and Wildlife, Lexington Metro Dive team and Lexington Fire Department assisted on scene with rescue efforts. Due to safety concerns the search was suspended early this morning just before 1:30 a.m. and resumed just before 8:30 a.m.

The Lexington Metro Dive team was able to locate the vehicle and juvenile just before 11:30 a.m. this morning. The 17 year old juvenile was pronounced deceased on scene by the Madison County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy will be performed at the State Medical Examiners office in Frankfort. 

The ongoing investigation is being conducted by Trooper Bobby Estes. He was assisted on scene by KSP Post 7 personnel, Richmond Fire Department, Madison County Fire Department, Madison County EMS, Madison County EMA, Fish and Wildlife, Lexington Metro Dive team and Lexington Fire Department.

Sheriff Greg Speck reports that on Wednesday November 9, 2022, Narcotics Detectives were conducting surveillance on a subject suspected of trafficking in illegal narcotics in Pulaski County.  At approximately 8:00 PM, Narcotics Detectives observed the suspected trafficker operating a Tan Mazda.  Detectives observed the vehicle failed to signal at the intersection of Clifty Road and Bethlehem Ridge Road.  The driver, Geovania Coleman, age 40 of Danville, was also operating the vehicle on a suspended license.

Deputy Nick Barber conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle, along with Detective Tan Hudson and Detective Lieutenant Daryl Kegley.  Deputy Barber deployed his K9, Giro, to conduct a walk around of the vehicle.  Upon walking around the vehicle with his K-9, Deputy Barber stated Giro indicated the presence of illegal narcotics in the vehicle.

Deputies began a search of the vehicle and located a backpack containing a large quantity of suspected methamphetamine.  During the search, a second bag was found that contained additional suspected methamphetamine, suspected Fentanyl, suspected cocaine, suspected marijuana, suspected Oxycodone tablets, baggies, and digital scales, along with assorted items of drug paraphernalia.

A search was conducted of Coleman, where Deputies located a firearm in Coleman’s possession, along with cash.  Coleman was arrested and all items were seized.

Field tests were conducted at the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office and all items weighed.  Seized from the traffic stop was 144.9 grams of methamphetamine, 15.1 grams of Fentanyl, 3.9 grams of cocaine, 6.5 suspected Oxycodone tablets, 8.5 grams of suspected marijuana, 3.4 grams of suspected Psilocybin (Mushrooms), and one (1) suspected Xanax tablet.

Detective Tan Hudson charged Coleman with the following charges:

1. Trafficking in a Controlled Substance 1st Degree, 2nd Offense (> or = 2 grams methamphetamine) 2. Aggravated Trafficking in a Controlled Substance 1st Degree, 2nd Offense (> or = 10 grams Carfentanil or Fentanyl derivatives) 3. Trafficking in a Controlled Substance, 1st Degree, 1st Offense (< 4 grams of cocaine) 4. Trafficking in Marijuana (less than 8 oz) 2nd > Offense 5. Drug Paraphernalia – Buy/Possess 6. Possession of Handgun by Convicted Felon 7. Operating on Suspended or Revoked Operators License 8. Trafficking in a Controlled Substance 1st Degree, 2nd Offense (> or = 10 D.U. Drug Unspecified)

The case remains under investigation by Detective Tan Hudson and the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division.

On Tuesday, Deputy Trent Massey was travelling north on South Highway 1247, when he observed a black Lincoln crossing the center line.  Deputy Massey conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle and encountered the driver, Justin Wilson, age 35, of Somerset.  Deputy Massey conducted some field sobriety tests on Wilson.

Deputy Massey deployed his K9, Leo, around the vehicle to conduct a free air sniff of the vehicle.  Following the free air sniff, Deputy Massey was able to determine his K9 indicated the presence of illegal narcotics in the vehicle.

Narcotics Detectives arrived on scene, to assist Deputy Massey with the search.  Deputies searched the vehicle and located a backpack in the trunk of the vehicle.  A search of the backpack uncovered a baggie containing suspected Fentanyl, two (2) sets of digital scales, baggies, marijuana, and syringes.

A field test was conducted on the substance at the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office.  The substance yielded a positive result for Fentanyl.  The weight of the Fentanyl was 3.9 grams.

Detective Lt. Daryl Kegley charged Wilson with the following charges:

1. Trafficking in a Controlled Substance 1st Degree, 2nd Offense (> or = 2 grams Fentanyl) 2. Possession of Marijuana 3. Drug Paraphernalia – Buy/Possess

The case remains under investigation by Detective Lt. Daryl Kegley and the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division.  Detective Tan Hudson assisted at the scene.

A Danville, Ky., man, Casey Scott Armstrong, 47, was sentenced to 360 months in federal prison on Monday, by U.S. District Judge Karen Caldwell, for production of child pornography.

Armstrong’s plea agreement confirms that, in March 2021, Armstrong began sharing methamphetamine with a minor female and, in May 2021, Armstrong began engaging in sexual acts with the same minor, later producing two videos of himself engaging in sex with the minor.  The plea agreement also confirms that Armstrong gave methamphetamine and engaged in sex with another minor female in August 2021.  

Armstrong pleaded guilty in August 2022.

Under federal law, Armstrong must serve 85 percent of his prison sentence. Upon his release from prison, he will be under the supervision of the U.S. Probation Office for life.

Carlton S. Shier, IV, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky; Jodi Cohen, Special Agent in Charge, FBI, Louisville Filed Office; and Chief Tony Gray, Danville Police Department jointly announced the sentence.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI and Danville Police Department. The United States was represented by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Erin Roth and Mary Melton.

This case was prosecuted as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice.  Led by U.S. Attorneys' Offices and the Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet as well as to identify and rescue victims.

A Liberty man arrested over the weekend after causing a disturbance with his car horn.

Deputy Hannah Lynn, with Casey County Sheriff's Office responded to the call Saturday afternoon on Chesnut Level Road, in reference to an alarm going off. The homeowner stated he'd heard a car horn honking on & off for several hours.

Deputy Lynn followed the sound to a residence at 113 Bailey Road, where she observed 49 year old David L Carmickle, in the driver's seat of a 2003 Ford F150 pickup, in the driveway, honking the horn. He stated he was honking to let someone know there were people inside and outside his home, talking to him.

This was the second contact that day with Mr. Carmickle, as he had called dispatch several hours prior, reporting people in his home that refused to leave.

The Deputy noted a strong odor of alcohol, and that Carmickle was sweating profusely, and talking out of his head. He also admitted to smoking Methamphetamine and drinking alcohol earlier that day.
Carmickle was medically cleared from the hospital, then lodged in the Casey County Jail on charges of Public Intoxication-Controlled Substance, and Disorderly Conduct-2nd Degree.

Officers with the Casey County Sheriff's Department, and Liberty Police responded Saturday to two separate calls on a silver truck, all over the roadway.

Liberty Officer, Caleb Wesley, located the vehicle on W. KY 70. He stated the truck was across the centerline and traveling approximately 25 MPH. Deputy Atwood initiated a traffic stop at the Valero station on W. 70.

The citation states the driver, 42 year old Maudencio Roberto Velasquez, of Dry Ridge Rd., Liberty, smelled of alcohol, and was unsteady on his feet. Officers noted two open cases of beer in the vehicle, and beer cans in the back floorboard.

Mr. Velasquez failed field sobriety tests and refused a blood test at the hospital.

He was lodged in the Casey County Jail on charges of DUI, and reckless driving.
 

A Liberty man was arrested Friday after causing a disturbance.

Three calls were made Friday afternoon, reporting a man had been yelling at passing vehicles, attempting to open the door on one vehicle, and punching it.

A Deputy with Casey County Sheriff's Office responded and made contact with 43 year old Garry T Grider, about two miles North East of Liberty on KY 1649, Dry Ridge Road, near the intersection of Westwood Drive. Upon contact, Mr. Grider reportedly punched himself in the face multiple times and was screaming and cussing.

He was cited for Disorderly Conduct-2nd Degree and transported to the Casey County Jail.

• Christopher R Fletcher, 22 of Eubank, arrested by Officer Guffey with Somerset PD for reckless driving, disregarding traffic light, fleeing/evading police 2^nd degree – motor vehicle, no registration plates, no insurance, possession of marijuana, & drug paraphernalia.

A Eubank woman pleads not-guilty to Murder charges Friday in Pulaski Circuit Court.

48 year old Crystal R. Crank is accused of causing a crash that killed a Kings Mountain man in August.

Investigators with Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office say Crank was driving a Toyota Camry when she crossed the center line on US 27 and collided head-on with a Toyota Yaris, driven by 59 year old Wesley Wall.

Wall was pronounced dead at the scene.

Crank was charged with Murder, DUI, Assault-1st Degree, and Criminal Mischief. She remains lodged in the Pulaski Co. Jail.

A pre-trial date is set for Thursday, Jan. 26, 2023.

Sheriff Greg Speck reports that on November 2, 2022, at approximately 8:25 PM, the Pulaski County
Sheriff's Office responded to a two-vehicle collision on US 27 in the Eubank area of northern Pulaski
County.
 

Upon arrival, Deputies discovered that a 2005 GMC Yukon had collided with a 2014 Black Nissan
Rogue. It was determined that the GMC, being operated by Ronald G. Rose, age 43, of R.D. Floyd Road in Eubank, Kentucky was traveling northbound on US 127 prior to the collision. The Nissan was being operated by Aaron R. Singleton, age 41, of East Highway 635, Science Hill, Kentucky. Mr. Singleton was turning from E. Highway 70 toward the southbound lane of US Highway 27 when the collision occurred.

Aaron Singleton was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Pulaski County Coroner’s Office.

A passenger with Mr. Singleton, Ashley Singleton, age 39 of the same address, was sitting in the passenger’s side front seat. Ms. Singleton was also pronounced deceased at the scene by the Pulaski County Coroner’s Office.

Ronald Rose was flown from the scene by Air Methods to the University of Kentucky Hospital where he remains as of this press release.

This accident remains under investigation by Deputy Ryan Jones with the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office and the Pulaski County Coroner’s Office.

The Kentucky State Police is assisting with the reconstruction of the scene. It is believed that the Yukon, operated by Rose, disregarded the traffic control device at that intersection resulting in the collision. That information is still being investigated.

Also responding to the scene and assisting were the Somerset/Pulaski County EMS, the Pulaski County Rescue Squad, and the Eubank Fire Department.

A Monticello man is behind bars after Wayne County Sheriff's Deputies discover a large amount of illegal drugs.

A traffic stop leads to drug charges for a Liberty man.

Shortly after 11pm Tuesday night, Deputy Ron Goodpaster, with Casey County Sheriff's Office, observed a 2003 Chevy passenger car driving on the wrong side of the road on Upper Brush Creek, about five miles west of Liberty. The car ran off the roadway several times as the Deputy was behind him, with his blue lights activated.

According to the arrest citation, the driver, 42 year old Christopher M Lester, of 194 Shucks Creek Rd., Liberty, smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech, and had trouble holding his head up.

Mr. Lester told the Deputy he had consumed several beers and smoked some marijuana. He refused a blood test.

Lester was lodged in the Casey County Jail on charges of DUI, Driving on DUI suspended OL's, and Possession of Marijuana.

The Liberty City Council met in special session Tuesday.

The council went into executive session for a few minutes to discuss personnel. No action was taken, however the council did vote to accept a resignation from an unnamed officer with Liberty Police Department, and release him from his contract.

The next regular meeting of the Liberty City Council is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 10th.

Kentucky State Police Post 15 will be conducting periodic traffic safety checkpoints in the Post 15 area, which includes Green, Taylor, Marion, Washington, Russell, Casey, Adair, Metcalfe, Monroe, Clinton, and Cumberland counties. 

These checkpoints will be conducted as part of Post 15’s highway safety efforts. 

Troopers will be checking for violations of Kentucky traffic and regulatory laws relating to motor vehicle equipment safety, licensing of drivers, motor vehicle registration, and operation of motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants.

Three people injured in an accident involving a cow in Wayne County.

Monticello Fire Fighters responded to the scene of a three-vehicle accident around 2am Monday morning on East Ky 90 near Cumberland Green.

A cow in the road was hit and killed, causing a head-on collision involving a Wayne County ambulance unit and two other vehicles.

Firefighters say one person had to be extricated from the ambulance.

Two people were transported to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset, and one to Wayne County Hospital.

The Kentucky State Police, London Post which provides coverage for Clay, Laurel, McCreary, Pulaski, Rockcastle, Wayne and Whitley counties, will be conducting periodic traffic safety checkpoints at approved by the Kentucky State Police Policy and Procedures Manual.

These checkpoints will be conducted in an effort to enforce the traffic laws of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Special attention will be paid to occupant protection (seatbelt adherence). Sobriety, insurance and registration violations.
