ERNEST GOES TO JAIL

A Monticello man is behind bars after Wayne County Sheriff's Deputies discover a large amount of illegal drugs.

According to Wayne County Sheriff Tim Catron on October 29, 2022, his office received a report from another counties police agency of them losing a black box containing K-9 training narcotics which they believed could have been lost in Wayne County.

An investigation conducted by Deputy Derek Dennis resulted in him obtaining information that the lost narcotic was picked up by a man and woman from Wayne County in Pulaski County and was now located at a residence on Kentucky Highway 1275 South/Spann Hill Road here in Wayne County.

On November 1, 2022, Deputy Dennis secured a search warrant for that residence. On November 2, 2022, at approximately 12:45 am Deputies Dennis, James Barnett and Allen Cash executed the search warrant.

No one was at the residence at the time the search warrant was executed. The search warrant resulted in 14.5 grams of methamphetamine, a small amount of marijuana, THC oil cartridges, suspected THC wax, and a small amount of cocaine was seized. Part of these items were identified by the reporting agency as belong to them and was part of their lost narcotics.

Deputy Dennis continued his investigation and learned that the involved persons was traveling back to Wayne County from another county to sell an amount of heroin here. Deputy Dennis along with Deputy Barnett observed for a vehicle on Kentucky East Highway 90 that was believed the suspects would be driving.

At approximately 8:20 am the Deputies observed the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The driver was immediately placed under arrest for the narcotics found at the residence during the search warrant. The driver denied consent to a search of his vehicle. Deputy Dennis then deployed his K-9 Unit Dunya for a free air sniff around the vehicle which alerted on the passenger side. A search of the vehicle resulted in 4 bags of a brown substance with an approximately weight of 18 grams of suspected heroin and 5 brown colored tablets known to be ecstasy were seized. The driver admitted that these items did in fact came from the black box that was reported lost.

Deputy Dennis charged and arrested Ernest S. Baker Jr. of Monticello, Ky. for trafficking in a controlled substance-1st degree (greater than or equal to 2 grams of methamphetamine), possession of a controlled substance-1st degree (cocaine), possession of marijuana, trafficking in a controlled substance-1st offense (heroin) and possession of a controlled substance-1st degree (drug unspecified).

Baker was lodged in the Wayne County Detention Center.
