Catherine Denelda (Nell) Hayes Herren, beloved sister, aunt, and friend, passed away on Sunday, January 21 at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville. She was 88 years old.

Nell was born in Clementsville, Kentucky, on February 2, 1935. She was the daughter of the late Kester and Eula Moxley Hayes. She is survived by sisters Virginia Emerson, Lola Sue Henson (David) and Sharlene Blevins all of Liberty. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews including Jeff Hayes, who she raised as her son and who was her caregiver.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands Virgil Courtwright, Elmer (Tate) Herren, and Horace Gosser; sister Anita Stafford; and brothers Talmadge Odell, David (Denny) and John Hayes.

Nell was a Christian and loved the Lord. She was a hard worker and held many jobs during her lifetime including owning and operating a general store on Whippoorwill Branch in Marion County. Although she never had children, she was like a mother to her nieces, nephews, and younger siblings. From fishing to farming, Nell loved outdoor life. She enjoyed gardening, bird watching, and planting flowers. Her green thumb could revive almost any plant.

She had a generous spirit and enjoyed sharing with others. She was always the first to lend a hand when someone was in need. After retiring, she enjoyed babysitting and spending her time quilting with her sister. In recent years, she spent her days cross-stitching gifts for her family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting bibles be donated in her memory.

Visitation will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday January 27, 2024, at Bartle Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Saturday January 27, 2024, at Bartle Funeral Home Chapel. Bro. Jeff Edwards officiating.

Burial will be in the Antioch Cemetery in Creston, KY.
