OBITS

JOHN MOORE

John Carl Moore, age 86, retired minister, passed from this life on Sunday, December 26, 2021 at The Neighborhood of Somerset after an extended illness.

He was born on February 9, 1935 in the Shopville Community of Pulaski County, Kentucky, son of the late John Raymond Moore and Zella Mize Moore.  John was a 1953 graduate of Somerset High School where he played in the SHS Band (cornett player), and in the UK Band in 1954. After several years as a Kentucky lineman for East Kentucky Rural Electric, John heard God’s call into the ministry. He completed his B.A. in Religion from Clear Creek Bible College and Cumberland College. His first pastorate was serving Northside Baptist Church in Science Hill, followed by several years pastoring Loyall Baptist Church, Loyall, KY. He continued his education, graduating with a Master of Divinity from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, magna cum laude. John began his ministry in Louisiana as the pastor of First Baptist Church, Avondale, and started a mission in Slidell. He returned to his home state of Kentucky, interim pastoring several churches while teaching at Somerset Community College.

John loved the outdoors and was an all-around type of person that enjoyed his hobbies of fishing, hunting, camping, golfing, softball, archery, bowling, and woodcarving.  He was a man of integrity, honesty and generosity, a loving husband, father and friend.  He was married to Wanda Linkes Moore on June 28, 1956 in Somerset, Kentucky. They enjoyed 65 years of life together.  John will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, James W. Moore and three sisters: Alma Buck, Betty Blevins, Audrey Hines and granddaughter, Ashley Ball.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife Wanda Wayne Linkes Moore of Somerset, three daughters; Paula (Ken) Pitman of Gastonia, North Carolina, Allyson (Richard) Navarro of Lancaster, Kentucky, Rachael Moore of Pensacola, Florida, and grandson, Alexander John Ball, as well as a host of other relatives and many friends.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at Grace Baptist Church, 340 Oak Leaf Lane, Somerset.  The Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be at 11:00 a.m. at the church with Rev. Bill Haynes and Rev. Michael West officiating.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Alzheimer Disease Respite Center, 125 West University Drive, Somerset, Kentucky 42501 where John enjoyed the care, music and creativity of those who serve there every day.  Or you may further support the spread of God’s word through contributions to the Gideon ministry.
