OBITS

GERALD SEWELL

Gerald Keith Sewell, age 86, of Somerset, passed away on Monday, November 8, 2021, at the Jean Waddle Care Center, of Somerset.

Gerald was born on August 17, 1935, in Dabney, son of the late Rev. Lloyd and Madeline Sewell. In 1954 he began working for Hughes Department Store downtown. Gerald married Barbara June Randolph on July 3, 1959, in Somerset.  He continued working downtown for Watson’s and then Holt Hardware before finally going to work for himself as a furniture refinisher and restorer. He and Barbara spent their younger years fishing and water skiing up and down Lake Cumberland.

Gerald was baptized at Pine Hill Baptist Church at 17 years of age. On July 23, 1975, their only daughter, Allison, was born. He and his family faithfully attended First Baptist Church of Somerset for 27 years. His quiet faith spoke volumes to anyone who knew him.

Gerald never met a stranger and would give anyone the shirt from his back. Friends who came for a visit hardly left without garden vegetables or apples in the summer. Along with his late wife, Gerald enjoyed playing games and doting on their two grandchildren. You knew you were following the Sewell’s if you saw “Quinn1” or “CadenK” on their license plates as they drove around town.

Gerald is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 61 years, Barbara; a sister, Louise Anderson (Curtis) Gilliland; a brother, William Richard Sewell; brothers-in-law Verl Whitis and Bill Hensley; and a sister-in-law, Ruby Sewell.

He is survived by their daughter and son-in-law, Allie and Chaz McGuire, of Somerset; his grandsons, Quinn and Caden, family members, including; Betty and Dave Bingham, Phyllis Whitis, Donald and Judy Whitaker, James and Joyce Sewell, Wanda and Jack Meece, Bobby and Merrlyn Crow, Doris Hensley, Judy Trimble and a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be after 9:30 a.m. on Friday, November 12, 2021 at the First Baptist Church of Somerset  until time for services.

Funeral services will at 11:00 a.m. at the Church with Gerald’s friends, David Pendley, Bro. Ryan Coffey and Bro. Steve Meece officiating.

Musical selections will be provided by Carole Hancock.

Interment will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made through donations to Jean Waddle Care Center c/o Hospice of Lake Cumberland, 100 Parkway Drive, Somerset, KY 42503. Their care for both Gerald and Barbara in their last moments was exceptional.
