OBITS

IRENE AKER

Irene Hunter Aker, age 105, of Somerset, passed from this life on Friday, at her residence after an extended illness.

She was born on Friday, August 27, 1915 in the Sugar Hill Community of Pulaski County, Kentucky. Irene was born during the time of World War I and survived the challenging times of World War II and the “Great Depression”, her stamina and tenacity also helped her to endure the times of two pandemics.  She was a strong independent woman of faith that raised her children in the fear and admonition of the Lord.  She enjoyed reading the Bible and had accomplished reading it through its entirety 3 times by the age of 100.  She was married to the late Herald Aker on June 17, 1931 who he preceded her in death on January 19, 1988.

Irene was a dear, kindhearted and loving mother who was the epitome of the Biblical Virtuous Woman.  Her strength and honor are her clothing and her rejoicing time has come.  She was of the Baptist Faith and a member of the Bethel Baptist Church, where she enjoyed teaching Vacation Bible School, working with the Women in the WMU with whom she made tireless and valuable contributions of time and efforts.  She also enjoyed flowers and the tranquility of being in the presence of the Lord.  She will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved her.

Besides her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by three children; George William Aker, Joe Allen Aker and Judy Aker who died at birth as well as a sister; Pauline Gilbert.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her children; Emily Ester (Rick) Kaelin of Springhill, Florida, David Douglas (Wanda) Aker of Corbin, Kentucky, Mary Catherine David of Dallas, Texas, Stephen Hunter (Donna) Aker of Science Hill, Kentucky and Michael Dale (Lesa) Aker of Eubank, Kentucky, 18 grandchildren, 25 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 in the Chapel of Somerset Undertaking Company & Crematory.

The Funeral Service will be held in the Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 pm with Bro. Rick Shannon and Bro. Vincent Carman officiating.
