On Saturday at approximately 8:00 p.m., Deputy Jacob Atwood of the Casey County Sheriff’s Office arrested Paul M. Banks, 34, of Liberty, on active warrants from Indiana. Upon arrival at the Casey County Jail, staff noted Banks’ elevated blood pressure and heart rate and requested medical clearance.
While being evaluated at Casey County Hospital, Banks became aggressive. Deputy Atwood, stationed outside the exam room, heard Banks raise his voice in a threatening tone. Upon entering, he observed Banks leaning toward a nurse in a hostile manner and intervened to prevent an assault. Banks responded by kicking the deputy in the chest and attempting further physical attacks.
Despite multiple taser deployments, Banks continued to resist. During the struggle, he managed to seize the deputy’s taser and raised it near the officer’s face. Dr. Daniel Lance intervened, successfully disarming Banks, allowing Deputy Atwood to regain control and place him in restraints.
Banks was medically cleared and returned to the Casey County Jail without further incident. He now faces charges including Menacing, Assault in the Third Degree (Police Officer), Disarming a Peace Officer, and Disorderly Conduct in the Second Degree.
