WASHINGTON CO. MAN CITED FOR PASSING A STOPPED SCHOOL BUS

A Springfield, KY man was cited Monday, Dec. 3, 2018 for allegedly passing a stopped school bus in Nelson County.

51-year-old Kevin Newsome is accused of passing the bus as it stopped on Lawrenceburg Road to unload children. The bus driver told sheriff’s deputies the signal lights were activated; the stop sign was out and a child was standing on the steps to exit when Newsome's vehicle came around the right side of the bus by the doors. Newsome claims he swerved to avoid striking the bus, going around the right side and hitting a mailbox and a ditch. Newsome told deputies he had taken a prescription pain pill early that morning, but nothing else. Tests conducted at the scene did not show any signs of Newsome being impaired.

Newsome is charged with passing a bus in the process of loading or unloading, reckless driving, and failure to produce an insurance card. He has an arraignment scheduled for Dec. 26.
